Do-it-yourself plaster is the most popular design method, but far from the only one. Let's take a closer look at each?

Making a plaster wall

  • Inexpensive way. Such coverage will not require financial investments.
  • Eco-friendly. The plaster does not contain harmful impurities.
  • Simple. No special skills or tools are needed here. Just a little care and patience.

Marking

Before starting the main work, it is necessary to prepare the surface - remove old finishing. If it is not level, level it with plaster and cover it with a primer. Another option is the dry leveling method. However, if the area of the room is small, this method is unlikely to be suitable, because the sheets will “eat up” the space.

Please note: if the apartment is in a new building, you can start decorating the room no earlier than 1 year after the completion of the house. Otherwise, the walls may shrink and cracks may form.

Once the surface is prepared for work, you can begin marking. And there are two options here.

First: some construction stores sell a ready-made mesh form; this method is simpler, but also more expensive. Second: independent marking. How to make an imitation brick wall with your own hands?

  • Standard size brick - 250 mm x 65 mm, the size of the joints is about 15 mm, although this is not important, and they, of course, can be changed.
  • Cut a brick out of cardboard with seams on the sides.
  • Mark the center of the brick, also taking into account the seams. You should get a blank like in the photo below.

Marking starts from the left corner. Provide in advance for indentations from the ceiling and floor - at least 5 cm. First, you can mark out the area according to the lattice principle, marking a grid, and then draw half of the brick through the row. Trace the resulting stones and you will have standard brickwork.

It is convenient to use 15 mm thick masking tape. Glue the jumpers overlapping, be sure to leave “tails” at the edges so that the tape can be easily removed later.

Marking

How to make an imitation brickwork on the wall as natural as possible? There are two ways to create such a masonry.

Individual elements

The size of the bricks is exactly the same - 250 mm x 60 mm. If in front of you is a sheet of expanded polystyrene (foam), then optimal width one product - about 12 mm.
The material is easy to cut with a regular construction knife with sharp blade. In this case, each detail will have its own texture.

Sheet

Instead of individual bricks, you can make decorative leaf, imitating masonry. Since foam melts easily, a soldering iron is used for this. They are passed along the seams, controlling the depth of pressure. Be especially careful with the corners - they should be smooth, without rounding or bevels.

I must say, this method is suitable for those who are already familiar with the material; It's unlikely to be done perfectly the first time. We need to practice.

When burning, be sure to wear a mask and ventilate the room well! When melting, foam releases harmful fumes.

Laying

They always start installing bricks from the corner, then lay door and window openings.

You can attach them directly to the wall using liquid nails, or to a sheet of drywall or plywood. Subsequently, such a sheet can be fixed with self-tapping screws. This method is more convenient, since the sheet lies on the floor, the work is carried out on a horizontal surface.

Painting and decor

Some leave the texture of foam plastic, while others cover it with putty to give the stone a special structure.

In any case, the material must be primed before painting. Choose your paint carefully, it can ruin the polystyrene foam. Solvent-free paints, such as water-based paints, are suitable. The result can be fixed matte acrylic varnish.

Learn more about creating foam bricks in the video below.

Making an imitation of tiles

Today at hardware store You can find several tile options. This is not only standard ceramic, but also modern soft - elastic clinker based on polyacrylic.

Working with elastic clinker

  • Very flexible material, fits on any surface, goes around even sharp corners.
  • Easy to cut with long scissors and can be cut into any shape.
  • UV and frost resistant, does not fade, breathes.
  • Suitable for both finishing interior spaces, and the facades of houses.

The surface preparation in this case is the same: it is primed. The difference is in the materials used. Most often, clinker is placed on tile adhesive, but the seller may advise you to purchase a special one from the manufacturer. This composition will make the tile more stable and hard.

  1. First, the rows are marked using a simple pencil and rulers.
  2. The glue is applied with a notched trowel; a layer of 2-3 mm is enough. There is no need to completely cover the entire area! Fill small areas so that the adhesive does not have time to dry.
  3. Apply the tiles carefully, without pressing hard. Making half a brick is easy, just cut it with scissors.
  4. After the main stage is completed, the glue on the seams is smoothed with a thin brush slightly moistened with water.
  5. Elastic clinker does not require the use of grout. This is an undoubted advantage of the material.

Features of solid materials

  • Gypsum rigid tiles are cheaper than analogues. However, its main disadvantage is that it is not at all resistant to humidity, so it cannot be installed in rooms with an aggressive environment, for example, in the bathroom or kitchen. However, there are also products with a protective coating.
  • Another view - from. Inexpensive yet durable, it is often used to create decor both indoors and outdoors. Interestingly, you can even make it yourself. The solution is simply poured into a special form.
  • Finally, the third type is clinker tiles. It has the highest operating characteristics, but the price is appropriate. It is rarely purchased for interior decoration.

Installation

The principle of working with rigid material is similar to working with elastic material. The main difference is that hard bricks will have to be cut, and this cannot be done without the appropriate tools. Will need a circular saw or Grinder with disk.

In addition, after installation it is necessary to seal the seams with a special compound. This must be done very carefully so as not to get on the stones, because it is difficult to scrub off.

In general, if you have experience laying tiles, there will be no problems.

The more light hits brick wall, the more natural and natural it should look. An illuminated decorative brick wall attracts attention, but if done carelessly or of poor quality, it cheapens the interior.

Choose a color based on the overall decor of the room. In warm weather interiors will suit standard terracotta, cold gray - to more brutal ones. By the way, it is better to add a little ocher to neutral white, so it will not seem flat and lifeless.

  • Material prepared by: Anastasia Khripunkova

Brickwork, made by the hands of a master, looks very attractive and aesthetically pleasing. Many home owners decide that it will decorate their home not only outside, but also inside.

But over time, it may require either repairs or some kind of external modification to match the overall style of the interior. This article will describe several ways to improve a brick wall on your own.

Repair of brick walls

Repair of brickwork is necessary if cracks appear on it, seams crumble, and the brick itself begins to hold poorly or deteriorate over time. Simply plastering the wall is not the solution, since you want to preserve the original appearance of the surface.

Preparatory work

Methods for eliminating defects depend on their type and degree of wear, but in any case, careful preparation of the surface for repair is first necessary.

You will have to do the following:

  • Delete layer old paint or plaster, if any;
  • Clean cracks and seams from mortar residues, dirt and dust using a stiff brush;
  • Rinse the wall with clean water;
  • Dry thoroughly.

The most difficult of the above is cleaning the walls from plaster, mortar protruding from the joints and adhered cement.

There are two ways to clean cement from a brick:

  • Mechanical. Before starting work, the surface is well moistened with water - this makes the solution easier to clean. Flat spots are cleaned off with a spatula or trowel. You can also use a metal brush, but it will scratch the surface, especially of sand-lime brick. Bulk pieces of cement are chipped using a chisel and hammer. To completely remove all dirt, use sandpaper or a sanding machine.

  • Chemical. Special means to soften cement mortar, you can buy and use it for its intended purpose, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Or you can dilute sulfuric or hydrochloric acid with water in a ratio of 1:10, and apply the solution to the wall for 10-30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the cement. After which, delete it mechanically, and rinse the surface with water. Of course, you need to remember to protect your eyes and skin.

Note! This method is only suitable for red ceramic bricks, but not for silicate bricks. Cleaning solutions contain acids that corrode it. But if you plan on aging and painting sand-lime brick in the future, you can try that too.

Restoration of old masonry

The most difficult question may be how to repair brickwork if the brick crumbles and does not hold well in place. A collapsing stone must be replaced, since moisture penetrates into the masonry through it, which will ultimately lead to larger-scale negative consequences.

Therefore, such bricks are removed from the wall, for which the seams around them are opened to the maximum depth using a chisel and hammer or perforator.

If necessary, neighboring stones are also removed. Those that have not been damaged should be tried not to be touched and left in place. After removing the defective elements, the surface is prepared for restoration, as described above.

Note. Pick up a new brick for old masonry in terms of color and texture it is quite difficult. You may have to artificially age it with your own hands. How this is done will be described a little later.

The whole process looks something like this:

Image Description
After removing the brick, remove the remaining mortar and dust from the resulting niche. We wet the surface.
Lay the solution at the bottom of the niche in a layer of 1-1.2 cm.
We dip the brick in water, and apply mortar to all faces except the bottom and front.
We install the stone in the niche and recess it, aligning it flush with the wall by tapping the mallet on the front edge.
Remove excess mortar and unstitch the seams.
Rub the seams around the new element with a damp sponge.

The instructions at first glance are very simple, but in the process surprises may arise with the destruction of large sections of the masonry. If you are not sure that you can handle it yourself, it is better to invite a specialist.

Restoration of seams

Quite often, repairing the brickwork of buildings requires only restoring seams and sealing small cracks. To do this, you need to embroider them as deeply as possible with a hammer and chisel, clean them from dirt, moisten them and fill them with fresh solution.

The question is - which one exactly? The fact is that old walls can be folded lime mortar, which is “not friendly” with cement. In this case, you will have to prepare a similar one.

If you could not determine the composition of the old solution, prepare a mixture of the following components:

  • White Portland cement – 1 part;
  • Fine sand - 6 parts;
  • Lime - 2 parts;
  • Water.

Or use clay by pressing it into the seams wooden block appropriate thickness.

In the case of masonry on cement mortar, you can take a ready-made cement-adhesive mixture and add a little gypsum to it. It compensates for the shrinkage of the seams and speeds up setting.

Deep seams should not be filled in one go - it is better to do it in stages, waiting for each layer to set. Excess solution is removed from the surface immediately, before it sets, using a wet sponge.

At the end repair work It is advisable to treat the walls with a primer deep penetration, varnish or other protective agent.

Three ways to change the look of a brick wall

Brickwork can become the highlight of an interior if you work on it a little. Among the options for its transformation, the most popular are cladding, painting and artificial aging. The choice will depend on the initial quality of the surface and the style in which the entire room is decorated.

Cladding with brick panels

Often, even after professional repair old wall It looks unsightly, although there are no complaints about durability. In the case when you don’t want to lose the texture, but you couldn’t bring the surface into decent shape, you can cover it with decorative panels that imitate masonry.

It could be basement siding under brick, panels made of polyvinyl chloride, MDF or gypsum, as well as clinker tiles or thin facing brick. And thermal panels are perfect for finishing and insulating external walls.

The installation method for these materials is different:

  • Wall panels are attached to the frame;
  • The facing tiles are glued to the surface using glue.

Look at some examples of such materials and their applications:

Don't be afraid to experiment with materials, but always pay attention to their characteristics and application. For example, basement brick siding can be used for interior decoration. But gypsum tiles for external cladding no good.

Painting

You can preserve the relief and transform the perception of space by painting the masonry. This technique is very common among designers, as it allows you to decorate the room in different styles depending on the chosen color and painting method.

But you should remember that subsequently return the wall original appearance, getting rid of a layer of paint will be impossible. Therefore, before making this decision, think carefully and look at examples of such interiors.

Accent wall in the bedroom

Choice matters a lot finishing composition. Deciding what to paint sand-lime brick outside, pay attention to the following paint characteristics:

  • Waterproof. It should protect the facade from precipitation and humid air.
  • Vapor permeability. The wall must “breathe”, otherwise it will be damp, which will lead to mold.
  • Resistant to fading due to UV rays.
  • Resistant to alkaline environment, as masonry mortar containing alkalis may destroy the coating.

To paints for interior work the requirements are more relaxed, so the choice is almost unlimited. The only thing that can upset you is high price. But if instead of silicone or latex coatings you choose acrylic or ordinary slaked lime, the result will be no worse.

Advice. Brick is very hygroscopic, so before painting the masonry must be treated with a penetrating primer. acrylic base. This will save on paint.

One more tip. You shouldn't paint new walls. You need to wait at least a year for the leaching process to complete and for the masonry to dry out and shrink. Before painting, the walls must be cleaned of dust, dirt, salt deposits and mold and dried.

Aging

Many interior solutions require turning new, smooth and even masonry into old, time-worn ones. As you know, breaking is not building, and the problem of how to age a brick wall is much easier to solve than the reverse.

To do this, use the following methods (all in bulk or selectively):

  • Surface treatment with abrasives- coarse sandpaper, wire brush or even a sandblaster.

  • Installation of chips and dents. They can be done along the edges and corners of the brick or on its faces in a chaotic manner. Tools – chisel and hammer, hammer drill.
  • Imitation of efflorescence using white paint applied with a sponge or swab, also in a random order. Or imitation of the remains of plaster.

  • “Dirtying” of the surface. Excellent black spots and stripes that will not fall off and stain clothes are made using blowtorch, with which the walls are burned until the color changes.

After this treatment, the walls will need additional protection. So that they do not collapse and can easily be cleaned, they are coated with a special oil or water-based varnish.

Conclusion

Brick walls in the interior look very impressive if they are correctly “fitted” into the overall design style. Knowing how to repair brickwork and its visual transformation, you can also make the design of your home unique. And the video in this article will help you with this.

Decoration living rooms natural materials – a good tradition in interior design. To the long-loved stone, forged metal, wood was joined (from the mid-20th century) by brick. Having become a successful mainstream in the living space furnishing segment, this material gives rooms an individual aesthetic. The apparent deliberate roughness of the brickwork in the interior emphasizes the originality of the room, its figurative contrast and immediately attracts attention - the desire to touch it with your hand involuntarily arises.

White brick in the interior gives the room a special aesthetics

A white brick wall favorably sets off the decorative elements of the room: furniture, textiles, decor. Against its background they sound new color accents and the textured nuances in the interior of each room are revealed. Moreover, this is not only affordable way original finish, but also the possibility of creative use of various functional designs:

  • protrusions;

    arched recesses.

Style secrets

Brickwork – distinguishing feature various style directions.

    characteristic pastel colors;

    Provençal textiles;

    other decorative elements.

    eco-design elements;

    natural materials;

    pastel colors;

    minimum amount of decor;

    white as a base (in northern countries there is so little sun, so a light background is out of competition).

Using decorative bricks you can create accent wall

Rules for using masonry in the interior

Rule #1

Don't be afraid to experiment!

Rule #2

Be guided by a sense of proportion and knowledge of style.

Rule #3

If you decide to experiment, use brick finishing in reasonable proportions, highlighting:

    fireplace area (or hearth area);

    individual architectural elements: niches, columns, arches, partitions;

    accent wall.

Having abused the decoration of the walls under white brick, you can get an uncomfortably cold atmosphere instead of the expected stylish sophistication.

Using this solution, you can highlight specific zones in the interior

What will we make bricks from?

Exists big choice materials for decorative masonry (or its imitation). Differing in appearance, texture, and price segment, they will be able to satisfy any consumer demand.

    drawing a masonry joint on fresh plaster that preserves the shape and size of the brick;

    applying plaster/putty mortar through a stencil imitating a brick texture;

    pre-gluing the plane masking tape(with electrical tape) along the lines of masonry joints, putty is applied to the marked area (in a continuous layer required thickness); electrical tape (scotch tape) is removed along with part of the mortar, exposing the natural masonry seam and creating natural look brick imitation.

When choosing a material for finishing, the main criterion (after aesthetic and financial) is its functional purpose for a certain type of room. So, they are best suited for a small hallway texture wallpaper with imitation, and as kitchen apron– easy to clean white clinker tiles.

For different rooms you need to select the material individually

White design secrets

Living room

In the case of a non-standard room layout and keeping in mind the use of only one plane with brick surface, try to make it the most bizarrely shaped wall (with protrusions, niches, recesses). In this case, masonry under white brick will adequately emphasize its individuality. If the shape of the living room is standard rectangular, then it will help to determine the “necessary” surface main element decor: this is where it will be placed.

The recreation area will also be located along such a wall. If there is a fireplace in the living room, then the question of choosing a surface for decoration disappears, since the area of the hearth and fireplace is always highlighted by masonry elements.

A brick wall for the living room will become great solution

Bedroom

White brick wall in the bedroom - excellent design solution. The seemingly rough white brick accentuates the comfort and softness of textiles: blankets and pillows. Decorative elements will successfully appear against its background: panels, paintings, mirrors, wall lamps.

The advantage of the decorated area is that, despite all the “flatness” of the pure, white, “sterile medical” color, such a surface is not uniform, but is embossed and textured.

White brick wall in the bedroom is an excellent design solution

Kitchen

Decorating its interior with masonry is used for the following purposes.

    Installation of a kitchen apron.
    The main requirement (besides design aesthetics) is increased functionality, moisture and heat resistance. Therefore, white clinker tiles are an excellent choice for the kitchen.

    Kitchen zoning.
    Highlighting dining area, White background walls will be emphasized by bright colors color solutions individual decorative elements.

    Installation of a bar counter or kitchen island(if space allows).

When choosing decorative bricks for your kitchen, you should take into account all the nuances of the room.

Summing up

While giving the design a special originality and sophisticated charm, using a white brick wall in the interior of a room still has some disadvantages. Of the minuses it is worth noting:

    relative high cost of the material;

    labor-intensive installation;

    reduction of room space with some types of such finishing.

This material is durable and matches all interior styles.

And yet there are much more undeniable advantages. Colored and white brick:

    durable;

    compatible with many interior styles;

    especially durable;

    resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations;

    goes well with wood, metal, glass.

When using this type of decoration in the interior, you should remember the dimensions of the room and achieve harmonious interaction with other design elements.

Imitation of decorative brickwork in modern interior- photo

IN modern design often you can
meet interiors with brickwork indoors. This effect
creates comfort and makes the room “warmer”. But for the sake of such an element
It is completely inappropriate to make a real brick wall where there is none
By construction plan. It is expensive, reduces the area of the room, and also
creates additional load on the foundation.

Just for such cases there are decorative panels with imitation
brickwork. And if for some reason the store option is for you
doesn’t fit, but there can be a lot of them: price, quality, color scheme,
shape, size, etc., then we can offer you a simple
and an inexpensive way to imitate brickwork with your own hands. And most
The great advantage of this method is that it does not require
special skills, for example, working with putty and other
construction mixtures.

To imitate brickwork you will need:

  • cardboard packaging boxes (thick cardboard is required)
  • PVA glue
  • hot glue gun and the rods for it
  • thick paper napkins
  • tassel
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • utility knife or scissors
  • paints, varnish

Progress

The surface on which the brickwork will be imitated
(it can be a wall or a panel), you need to prepare it first.
Clean the wall of old wallpaper, prime if necessary
a special construction primer or a 1 to 2 solution of PVA glue and water.
If the wall was covered with paint, then wipe the surface from dust
and degrease.

Imitation of decorative brickwork

There are quite a few varieties of bricks. It all depends on what
will suit your interior better. And, if it happens with the color of the brick
opportunity to experiment, then with the size of the bricks you need
decide immediately. The main dimensions of the brick can be seen in the figure

In addition, the type of masonry depends on which side of the brick will be
visible Each side has its own name and will be completely different
look in the interior.

1 - bed

Eat different variants decorative brickwork: for example, external
side can be completely laid out with a bed or a spoon, or maybe
combine different sides of the brick.

In our example, we will imitate red brick masonry; we will lay it with a spoon with dimensions of 228x65.

On a sheet of thick cardboard (packaging box) we draw out the “bricks” of the required size.

Then we cut the sheets along the marked lines using scissors or a stationery knife and a ruler.

The “masonry” in the interior can be either continuous or open to us
some image. For clarity, in in this example We took
photo from the calendar. In the interior this can be a drawing, photo wallpaper,
stucco, etc.

Mark the boundaries of the drawing. If the boundaries according to the plan should
go under the brick decorative masonry, place the drawing on the wall.
We glue, we draw, we sculpt.

We cut some of the resulting “bricks” in half. This is needed for
so that the masonry is staggered and looks realistic.

We begin to glue the “bricks” to the surface. This can be done
glue for heavy wallpaper, for example, vinyl. You can use PVA glue or any
other convenient for you in your work. After some experiments
I settled on this method: PVA construction glue + adhesive
heat gun. If we consider them separately, then PVA glue takes a long time
dries and does not immediately fix the bricks, but a hot glue gun, if
use without PVA, it uses up the rods very quickly. Therefore we do
like this: apply PVA glue to the entire rectangle, with the exception of the
corners We apply glue from a hot-melt gun to the corners. Hot melt adhesive immediately
fixes the “brick” in the right place, and the PVA securely fastens it
during the day.

It is most convenient to start laying from a corner. We fix the first “brick” in the lower left corner.

We will fasten the next one at a certain distance, leaving space for an imitation seam of 07-10mm.

We will retreat the same distance from above, starting to lay out the second
row. It will start with half a “brick” to form a masonry
in a checkerboard pattern.

When all the rectangles are glued, leave them to dry.
for the time specified in the glue instructions. If it's construction
PVA glue, the drying time will take about a day.

When the glue dries and the “bricks” are securely along the entire length
fixed on the wall or panel, let's start decorating
napkins. This is necessary to give texture to our brick
masonry and hide the corrugation of the packaging cardboard.

You need thick napkins High Quality so that, when soaked in glue, they do not tear or roll up.

Using a brush or sponge, thickly apply PVA glue on top of the rectangles.

We crumple the napkin in our hands to form folds.

And we apply it to the wall, in the place where the glue was applied. Apply glue on top of the napkin with a brush once again.

Select the gaps between the rectangles with a brush or finger.

This way we cover the entire wall. We make sure that there are folds and well-defined gaps - seams between the masonry.

Let it dry for another day.

When the glue dries and hardens, we begin painting.

The color is selected in accordance with the design. In this example
we imitate red brick. By mixing white, orange, red
and black paint we achieve similarity with the original color of the brick.

And we cover the “bricks”. You can do this with a brush, or with a sponge, imitating the slightly porous structure of brick.

Then we go through the “seams” in the brickwork with a thin brush. Color
You can also choose the solution to your taste. But most often he has a little
grayish tint.

Remember that after drying the paint becomes lighter than it seems
in a liquid state. If after drying the color does not suit you,
then the wall can be repainted until it gets the desired
shade.

When everything is ready, the folds on the bricks can be highlighted with a darker or
lighter paint, thereby giving the masonry a little antiquity
and textures.

Apply paint of a suitable shade to the “bricks” with a dry brush.

It is best to varnish the paint on top to protect the surface from moisture and dust.

Such walls in the interior look very believable and beautiful.
The work is not difficult, you don’t need to be professional to do it
builder or finisher, materials are available and everything can be done
choosing colors and shapes to suit your interior according to your taste.
