How to make a wooden ridge staircase at home. Roof ladder - how to make various designs yourself

The roof of a building is the basis for safe living in it. It protects residents from atmospheric precipitation and adverse weather conditions. Preventive inspections, carried out twice a year, are required to detect even the slightest damage. But how to climb onto the roof and carry it out if the angle of inclination of the slope is very large? Here you will need a ladder for the roof. I will tell you how to do it in this article.

Is a roof ladder really necessary?

The ladder to the roof can be used not only for carrying out preventive inspections, but also used in the following cases:

  • When there is a need to clean ventilation or chimney ducts
  • At repair work Oh
  • For cleaning the surface from various debris or snow
  • If the roofing surface is laid using very load-sensitive materials and movement on them will negatively affect their structure

As evidence of the last point, I can give several examples of such products. They are modern coatings from polymers laid by the pouring method and some membranes. Human weight is quite enough to locally destroy these coatings.

When installing a ladder on your roof, you should always take safety precautions into account. As a rule, residents of private houses rely entirely on their luck during repair work and completely forget about safety equipment. For most of them, these jobs end in failure. If you do not want to purchase safety devices, then you can easily borrow one from your friends or neighbors.

A high-quality ladder for roof repair should have maximum stability and reliability. I’ll tell you how to do this correctly a little later, but for now let’s look at their types.

Types of stairs

The staircase can be made from almost any material, but these types are considered standard:

  • Wooden
  • Non-separable metal. Most often made of steel or aluminum
  • Metal from prefabricated parts

All of the above types can be used on any type of roof, regardless of their slope and configuration.

Wooden stairs are assembled from a specific set of lumber. It includes two long boards, small bars with sharpened corners, and auxiliary parts. This type of stairs is usually installed on top of the roofing material. They are fixed at several points on the roof. If it is mounted on slate or metal tiles, then the fastening elements are best placed at the bottom of the wave. To protect wood from rotting, it is best to treat it with antiseptics and then paint it with paints and varnishes.

As for metal structures, they are built from steel or aluminum pipes with a suitable diameter. Their fixation on roof slope occurs using special brackets. These fasteners must have rubberized linings. The stairs produced by the factory are made from a galvanized product, over which paint is applied. It acts as a protective layer and is applied by spraying. As a rule, such elements are painted black, brown or White color. If you decide to order a ladder rather than buy it from finished form, then you can set this parameter to a completely different shade.

Prefabricated metal stair structures do not include welding work. They are assembled using special threaded connections. To fasten these elements on the roof surface, use special products or brackets.

Complexity roof configuration will completely influence their number and type.

IMPORTANT: To fasten a metal staircase to metal tiles, from 2 to 10 brackets are used, and 2 of them will be ridge brackets. An identical number of elements will be needed for a roof made of corrugated sheets with a slight wave.

Prefabricated structures typically consist of a small number of parts. They include wall and roof sections. Thanks to this design, they can be lifted directly from the ground. The height of the wall part should not reach the eaves by about 10 centimeters; as for the distance from the wall, the minimum value is 20 centimeters. Installing stairs closer than this distance is prohibited.

The section of the staircase located on the roof is connected to the wall using the same brackets. Their pins pass through the roofing, therefore, these places must be treated with moisture-resistant sealants. If you do not have enough distance to the roof overhang, then you can purchase additional stair modules. These parts are connected using the bolt method.

IMPORTANT: In the place where the wall part meets the roof part, handrails and appropriate protection against falling backwards must be installed.

The nuances of assembling a wooden structure

The staircase to the roof of the house can easily be created on your own. Before starting the process itself, let's look at some of the nuances of this matter.

To create a high-quality and stable structure you will need the following materials:

  • Two long boards with a section of 16x2.5 centimeters
  • A certain number of bars with a cross section of 4x4 centimeters. Everything will depend on the distance between these elements and the length of the support boards
  • Nails 100 millimeters

When putting the design together, you need to remember some nuances.

  1. Boards must have a minimum width of 16 centimeters. If this parameter is not enough, then calculations to find the distributed load will help determine it
  2. If the plane of your roof is laid from corrugated material, then the distance between the support boards must be selected according to the distance between the waves. The structure is created in such a width that the boards are located on the lower waves roofing
  3. It is best to sharpen the bars that will be installed as steps. This will make you feel more stable on the stairs. If you place a large number of steps, then it will be very difficult for you to climb, and you will significantly increase the mass of this structure
  4. The fastening elements are ordinary nails. Their minimum length should be 100 millimeters. If the material is pierced through, the sharp ends must be recessed into the wood
  5. If you need the ladder to be independently supported on the roof slope, then you need to provide a triangular holder. It is worth noting that for greater stability it should extend onto the back side of the roof by about a third of the length of the slope

The auxiliary triangular holder is made from the same lumber as the ladder itself. The material you will need is thick boards and long nails of about 15-20 centimeters.

A do-it-yourself roof ladder is quite easy to assemble, all you need is to have everything necessary tools and materials. So that the steps have greater stability in support boards It's best to make some indentations. They can be produced using a drill with a special round attachment. Thanks to it, you can drill through the board and create more beautiful design, but don’t get carried away with the holes. A large amount weakens the entire structure.

It is best to tamp small pieces of wood under the created recesses. If the main fasteners are damaged, they will provide additional support and this element will not fail during operation.

I hope this information will be enough to understand how to make a ladder for the roof.

Metal staircase assembly process

For safety reasons, a roof ladder consisting of separate parts is assembled not on the roof surface, but on the ground. This will allow you to get the job done in more time. safe conditions, as a result of which the speed of its execution will increase. As preparatory work you need to find the required length, and only then assemble.

The assembly work then progresses to welding work. During this process, it is necessary to install fasteners for the ridge and base. The remaining fasteners are placed in increments of 2 meters.

After completing the previous steps, the structure is lifted onto the roof. It is worth noting that workers should be equipped with safety harnesses, tested ropes, gloves and non-slip shoes.

The raised ladder is attached to the top board of the sheathing and left on it. The workers themselves begin to assemble the wall part of the structure. It is erected identically to the roofing. Only with some difference. Instead of brackets, wall supports are welded. Their step is approximately 2 meters. Handrails are installed as protection.

After the installation and fastening of these parts, they are joined. This area must be developed additional protection from falling.

For convenience and speed of installation, it is better to purchase lightweight staircase structures, for example, aluminum ones. Despite the fact that the released products have a protective layer of paint, it is better to play it safe and apply another one. It is worth understanding that the oxidation of metals difficult process. Therefore, use fasteners with identical material, otherwise your structure will very soon become covered with rust, even if it has many layers of protection.

Responsible owners should always carry out preventive inspections of their roof, and a high-quality lifting structure will allow this to be carried out without problems.

The roof ladder and its design are similar to the usual one, with parallel bars and equipped with an additional stop that allows it to securely hook onto.

A metal roofing ladder is used to safely climb onto the roof.

Using a ladder or ladder to repair the roof will provide maximum comfort when working on a roof that has a strong angle of inclination. In addition to roof repairs, a ladder to the roof is indispensable for installing the upper part of a stone or chimney, which is located above the roof. It will also allow you to repair pipes, install an antenna, etc. much faster.

Today, various construction bases and hardware stores offer a fairly wide range of these products. Roof ladders are mainly made of aluminum.

The big disadvantage of using ready-made stairs is due to the fact that the distance between the bars does not coincide with the distance of the waves of the roof covering, which is very fragile, such as, for example. In this regard, there is a possibility of destruction of sheets of material, which will entail the need to replace them, and this will be additional financial expenses. To avoid this, it is better to make a ladder to the roof to repair the roof yourself.

To provide best conditions To work on the roof, you need to start by measuring the distance from the edge of the roof slope to the ridge of the roof. The resulting value will be the length of the longitudinal bars. Parts made of hardwood or hardwood are suitable as materials for them. coniferous species wood, their cross-section should be 30x100 or 30x80 mm. How large the cross-section will be depends on the height of the waves on the roofing material. To make steps, you can use a material whose cross-section is no less than 30x60 mm.

Making stairs for the roof

To make a ladder to the roof, you need to prepare all the parts of the required section. First of all, make sure that the distance of the vertical bars is a multiple of the distance at which the waves of ondulin (bitumen slate) or slate (if present as a roof) are located from each other. Next, based on the obtained size, you need to cut the steps. To make the staircase convenient to use, it is advisable to make the distance between steps no more than 40 cm.

Using nails or self-tapping screws 80 mm or more long, attach the parts that you have prepared to the longitudinal ones. Make sure to make a connection without protruding the connecting element from the bottom of the bowstring.

A wooden roof staircase is the simplest and most inexpensive design that you can make with your own hands.

The main device that allows you to catch on to the skate is the hook. To make a hook, you will need to attach two short bars, approximately 80 cm long, at the upper end at an equal angle between the slopes. To avoid damaging the roofing material or soft tiles, attach cross bars to the ends of the hook, which will probably remain after making the feet. Do not forget that the health of you and your loved ones will depend on how well you do the work.

And in conclusion, a few words about the nuances of installing and moving such devices on the roof.

First of all, such moving and installation work should only be carried out with a partner. To make it more convenient to work, you can equip the ladder with wheels. Then, if you need to reinstall it, it will be enough to turn the ladder over on its wheels without fear of damaging the roof. Alas, this is not for all cases. option will do, problems may arise with corrugated materials such as slate, ondulin and clay tiles.

To avoid breaking the hook, it is better to have only one person on the ladder. If you need to speed up your work, then it’s better not to be lazy and make a second staircase.

Conclusion

And lastly, periodically check the position of the hook of the ladder to the roof. And, if a defect is discovered, fix it immediately and only then continue work. It would also be a good idea to use additional insurance. Be careful and good luck!

As you know, the roof is the main protection of any building, both residential and industrial. Because everyone who builds a house or makes major renovation roofs, tries to carry out the entire procedure in such a way that in the next 25-30 years there will be no problems with the roof. But for any owner of a private house or cottage, there are cases when, for example, it is necessary to install or replace an antenna, and the possibility of exposure to destructive natural disasters cannot be excluded: hurricane, tornado, hail, etc., which usually lead to damage to roofing material . Then homeowners with little foresight are faced with a problem: how to climb onto the roof and carry out the intended work in such a way as not to damage entire roof elements? The solution to this issue is simple - prematurely build and secure an assembly ladder on the roof. In this regard, we will figure out how to make a staircase to the roof with your own hands, and also determine its main types.

Types of roof ladders

Note! An installation ladder for working on the roof is required for any type of roof, even, at first glance, durable polymer materials on hipped roofs, bend under the local mechanical impact, and the protective stone chips of bitumen shingles fall off. All this leads to deformation of the protective layer and disruption of waterproofing.

The most common types of roofing ladders are:

  • wall-mounted - the design is made in such a way that the main part of the staircase has a continuation. After the ladder is placed against the wall, the continuation goes onto the roof and you can safely move along it;
  • attic - originate inside the house (in the attic), and end on the roof itself;
  • stationary - made of wood or metal, mounted on the roof, and non-removable.

Such mounting devices, made of steel, aluminum or wood, are designed for installation on hip roof types. The simplicity of the design allows you to independently (without involving a specialist) assemble the staircase from individual parts. A do-it-yourself staircase to the roof is an interesting and, most importantly, useful construction project, which in the future will definitely justify the money, time and labor spent.

Important! During the installation of a wall ladder, it is necessary to comply with all safety requirements. The distance from the top step to the eaves should not exceed 10 cm, and the gap between the stairs and the wall should be at least 20 cm. In the place where the stairs meet the roof, reinforced handrails must be installed to facilitate the process of climbing onto the roof.

The mounting ladder is secured using reinforced brackets that pass through the roof for more reliable fixation. It is necessary to place at the connection points rubber gaskets, they can also be replaced with any other sealant. The sections are connected in series and attached to the roof, the final element is securely fixed to the ridge. Not only the aesthetics of the house, but also the life of the person who climbs onto the roof depends on the quality work carried out on the installation of a roofing ladder.

Required Tools

Basically, the installation ladder is made of wooden beams; therefore, anyone who decides to independently make a device for roof repair cannot do without the following building materials and tools:

  • hammer - needed to fasten the boards together using nails;
  • saw or jigsaw - will ensure cutting of boards and beams of the required size;
  • tape measure - will help with marking;
  • a screwdriver or a shaped screwdriver - if you use screws, this will allow you to screw them in correctly;
  • weaving nails (length 100 mm) or screws;
  • wooden beams - 40 x 40 mm, boards - 25 x 60 mm.

Note! The length of the board is selected in accordance with the dimensions of the roof, therefore in each case the dimensions of the product are selected individually - there are no uniform standards in this regard. In addition, the ladder for roofing work will last longer if, instead of the usual nails, you use hardened self-tapping screws, which do not oxidize or wear out under the influence of natural phenomena.

Making a wooden staircase

Once all the tools and materials are prepared, you can begin assembling the ladder itself. The side boards of the future object should be as wide as possible, this will protect the roof from mechanical damage, in this case the entire load will be evenly distributed over the entire surface of the slate, metal profile or ondulin.

  • The length of the stairs should be from 70 to 80% of the length of the roof, and its steps should preferably be made of larger timber (40 x 40 is an excellent choice).
  • Having measured the side boards to the required length, it comes into play electric jigsaw: they cut straight edges without haste, which are then sanded, thereby significantly reducing the likelihood of injury from sharp edges.
  • Then you need to place the boards parallel to each other, so that they are ready for installing the steps.
  • As mentioned above, the steps are attached using screws or nails. If the choice fell on screws, then it is advisable to drill holes in the bars, which will reduce the risk of cracking of the material. After the steps are fixed on the side boards, it is recommended to carefully sand the finished staircase so that it does not damage the roof.
  • The next important point is to attach the ladder to the roof. This process is accompanied by the creation of a special hook from the same material as the ladder. It is, in fact, a kind of mirror image of the finished structure, only not so long. The hook will go to the second half of the roof. The main thing is to reliably connect these structural elements between themselves, in this case you can use metal corners.
  • There is also an option when a wooden ladder is attached to the roof ridge. Then you first need to install special corners on the stairs, one side of which is fixed on the side board, and the second is screwed using “fleas” or other metal screws to the ridge. This arrangement of the installation ladder along the ridge provides greater safety when carrying out construction work on the roof.

Making a metal staircase

Prefabricated

Main structural material Such stairs are made of aluminum. Its advantage is that it does not corrode, does not create additional load on floors and roofs, and does not require special care. Aluminum ladder for working on the roof is sold in any hardware store in disassembled form. The owner of the house only needs to assemble it and securely fix it using the existing fasteners.

Monolithic

Also metal stairs are made from heavier materials, and they are rarely type-set. They are usually welded from pipes of the same or different diameters, covered with a protective layer of paint and mounted on the roof. The disadvantages of such designs include their large weight, which precludes their use on roofs made of corrugated sheets or roofing felt. In addition, the iron ladder must be periodically sanded and re-painted, otherwise it will quickly rot. Iron stairs can have a special wall design: they originate on the wall of the house, rise up and then go along the entire roof to the very “top” of the house. Along the transition of the wall to the roof, safety handrails are installed; they facilitate the lifting process.

Note! The great advantage of a wall-mounted iron staircase is its use as an emergency exit. But for this it is necessary to equip the roof from the inside (be it attic space or second floor) with a special hatch, which in extreme cases can be easily dismantled and serves as an emergency escape. In this case, you can go down the stairs and escape from the fire.

Important accents that must be taken into account when installing stairs

Having figured out how to make a roofing ladder with your own hands, you need to dwell on the features of its installation and operation:

  • It is very important to understand that a ladder on the roof, especially with more sharp corners roof slope must have increased reliability and reinforced fasteners. For greater safety, you can create a wooden counterweight from heavier types of boards on the hook on the opposite side.
  • Also, experts categorically do not recommend attaching any hooks to the stairs, which, in the opinion of the house owner, will help with tools in the future. This opinion is erroneous from a safety point of view, since a person can accidentally get caught on one of these hooks and get hurt, and as you know, lacerations are very painful and take longer to heal.
  • You should not carry out the work of assembling and securing the roof ladder alone. This may complicate this procedure Moreover, working at height without insurance is life-threatening. The creation of the staircase occurs at the bottom, and its ascent is carried out using scaffolding, this will keep the structure intact and protect yourself from danger.

In addition, you need to remember the most important rule (unwritten) of the builder: “If one of the fasteners is deformed or worse, fails and there is no way to replace it, or the place for fastening is too flimsy, then the ladder must be moved to another more reliable place " At one of the “responsible” moments, this can save a life.

According to the requirements of modern building codes, private roofs residential buildings and utility buildings with a slope above a certain value must be equipped with a special ladder for working on the roof, allowing you to move along it without the risk of losing balance. The need to use such a ladder is explained by the need to periodically inspect the roofing surface in order to identify damaged areas on it that need urgent repairs.

Rationale for use

In addition to the ability to monitor the condition of the roof, the presence of a special ladder on the roof allows you to:

  • inspect the outlets of ventilation and chimney pipes located on the roof;
  • have access to the roof ridge, the condition of which also requires preventive maintenance;
  • and, finally, protect the roof from damage that may occur when moving directly on the roofing itself.

The latter circumstance is explained by the fact that some types of roofing coverings are very sensitive to unforeseen operational loads and can be deformed or even partially destroyed under the influence of human weight when directly moving over them.

Modern membrane or bulk liquids have these features. polymer coatings, and also known to many bitumen shingles, which may lose its protective properties as a result of partial destruction. When considering the need to equip a roof with a ladder, one should also not forget about the high risk of falling from a steep, slippery slope, which poses a very real danger to human health.

Of course, such an auxiliary device can easily be purchased by you ready-made in any specialized store. However, discussing the topic of building a roof staircase with your own hands arouses some interest among users who are accustomed to doing everything on their own. But first, let's look at the known types of staircase structures used on the slopes of modern roofs.

Types of staircase structures

Known types of staircase structures used on roof slopes can have the following designs:

  • wooden stairs;
  • solid stairs made of metal (steel or aluminum);
  • prefabricated metal structures.

All of these staircase options can be used on the most various types roofs, taking into account the peculiarities of their placement and fastening on slopes. For the manufacture of wooden stairs, a standard set of wood blanks is used, which includes two support guides and several jumpers (the number of which is determined by the total length of the structure). Such stairs are usually laid directly on roofing material with fixation at several points on the roof (for example, on a slate or metal tile roof, fastening is carried out using special clamps mounted at the bottom of the wave).

Metal structures are usually made from steel pipes suitable diameter or from aluminum profile standard size and are fixed to the roof using special brackets mounted on rubberized gaskets. Industrial samples of such stairs are made from galvanized pipes with powder coating applied to their surface (color protective coating can be anything, but black, white or brown are most often used). When making your own staircase to the roof, this color can be chosen according to your taste, i.e. individually.

Prefabricated metal staircase structures are assembled by building up from several independent modules without the use of welding. To secure such structures to the roof and its elements, special fasteners or brackets are used, the choice of which is determined by the configuration of the slopes and the type of roofing material.

Typically, to secure staircase design on a metal roof, for example, from 2 to 10 roofing brackets and 2 ridge brackets are used. A similar set of fastening elements can be used when installing stairs on a roof made of corrugated sheets with a low profile.

Prefabricated metal stairs consist of two parts (wall and roof sections), which allows you to climb them directly from the ground. When installing the wall part of such structures, you should remember that the distance from their top step to the cut of the cornice should not be more than 10 cm, and the distance of the staircase itself from the wall should not be less than 20 cm.

The roof section of the prefabricated structure is attached to the wall part using special brackets, the elements of which pass through the roof covering, which is sealed with moisture-resistant rubber gaskets. For getting required length modules of the staircase or its sections are articulated with each other bolted connections; in this case, the uppermost link is fixed on the ridge beam.

At the junction of the wall section of the staircase with its roof part, restrictive handrails must be installed to protect a person from falling.

Features of manufacturing a wooden structure

Order self-made We will look at an example of a separate staircase to the roof slope wooden structure, as the simplest and cheapest to implement.

To arrange such a staircase you will need:

  • board blanks with a section of 160×25 mm;
  • a set of blanks and scraps of timber with a cross-section of about 40×40 mm (40–60 mm);
  • a set of nails with a length of at least 100 mm.

When assembling the structure, main attention should be paid to the following points:

  1. The width of the support guides (at least 160 mm) is selected taking into account the distributed load, eliminating the possibility of damage to the roofing material.
  2. On roofs with a wave-like covering, the distance between the side guides made of wood should be selected as a multiple of the length of the wave, which allows the staircase to be positioned with support on the depression.
  3. To make cross-steps, it is more convenient to use timber blanks, since the foot is held on them better than on boards. Please note that you should not be partial when choosing the distance between adjacent steps, since this, on the one hand, increases the weight of the finished structure, and on the other, reduces the ease of moving along it.
  4. The steps are fastened to the guides using 100 mm nails, which must be bent on the reverse side (with the tip hidden in the wood material).
  5. In order to be able to secure the ladder to the ridge, at its upper end it is necessary to provide a special element in the form of an additional thickening made from scraps of timber. Special attention You should pay attention to the reliability of its attachment to the base of the stairs.

So extra fastener can be made from boards of sufficient thickness, which are attached to the base with nails measuring at least 150–200 mm. To securely fasten the ladder to the ridge, the thickness of the hook must be at least 30 cm.

Self-fabrication of a prefabricated structure

Before making a staircase in the form of a composite metal structure, we recommend that you carry out its preliminary assembly directly on the ground, which will allow you to complete everything in safe conditions necessary procedures. During this assembly process, the required length is first adjusted future design(in accordance with the dimensions of the equipped ramp). After this, elements for fastening it to the ridge are mounted on the base of the staircase, and roof brackets are welded at intervals of about 2 meters.

And only after all these procedures are completed, the finished structure is lifted onto the roof and hooked with a ridge bracket to the top board of the sheathing. In the same way, that is, the wall part of the staircase is assembled on the ground. During the assembly process, wall supports are mounted on it in increments of about 2 meters, as well as restrictive handrails. In addition, additional brackets are welded to the uppermost wall supports, which are used to secure the structure to the eaves.

And only after this is the wall span of the staircase connected to the main part already placed on the roof (using two connecting brackets). During installation, it is necessary to ensure that its lower step-crossbar is at a height of about one meter above the ground, and the upper one is about 10 cm above the level of the cornice.

At the final stage of assembly, the brackets pre-installed on the roofing section of the staircase are attached to pre-designated points on the slope with the obligatory use of special sealing gaskets.

An option for making a wooden staircase in the following video:

Many owners of country cottages are interested in the question of how to make a staircase to the roof with their own hands. own home for its maintenance and repair work during operation? There are many options for staircase structures made of wood and aluminum. But for any product there are basic rules and safety requirements. In order to make a staircase with your own hands, you first need to study the assembly instructions, prepare necessary building materials and tools.

In this article

Types of staircase structures for the roof

Can be used for roofing work following types stairs

Wall-mounted

The scheme of this design involves fastening the stairs directly to the wall of the building, therefore, when erecting walls, mounting brackets are specially laid. Wood, aluminum and steel can be used as materials for wall-mounted staircase structures.

Basic installation requirements:

  • The minimum distance from the stairs to the wall is 20 cm.
  • The first (bottom) step should be one meter higher from the ground surface.
  • The outermost (upper) step should be at the level of the cornice or 0.1 meter below it.

The wall ladder is additionally designed for evacuation!

Attic

This version of stairs is intended for interior work in the attic, so its design can be sliding or folding.

Roofing (pitched)

This version of the ladder structure is designed for work on the roof, therefore it is installed directly on the roof slope. The product is fixed by the ridge using a special hook. Factory versions of stairs are usually made of aluminum; at home, wood is used. With the help of such a ladder design you can move freely along the surface sloping roof with a large slope slope.

Recommendations for making a wooden roof staircase with your own hands

If you decide to make a roof staircase yourself at home, you first need to prepare building materials and the necessary tools. Of course, metal products are much stronger and more durable, but to make them you need to have special tools, for example welding machine, accordingly, you need to be able to work with welding. This option is not suitable for everyone. But to do it wooden stairs in everyday life everyone is capable.

Wooden staircase structures have fairly simple drawings, they are easy to make with your own hands, they do not require special tools, while being much cheaper than metal and aluminum analogues. Most the best option For country cottage is considered a wooden roof ladder made of coniferous trees. This product will not rot, so it will last quite a long time.

Required Tools

For the manufacture of roofing ladders they are most often used wooden beam, so you will need the following tools:

  • Hammer. Needed when fastening individual elements of a wooden staircase structure with nails.
  • Hand saw (electric jigsaw). It will be needed to cut lumber to the required sizes.
  • Construction tape. Needed for marking wooden pieces.
  • Phillips screwdriver (screwdriver). Required if screws are used instead of nails to fasten individual structural elements.
  • Nails - “weave” or screws.
  • timber- 4x4 cm
  • Boards- 2.5x6 cm

Important! The length of the board must be selected depending on the size of the roof - there is no single standard! A staircase structure intended for roofing work will last much longer if you use hardened self-tapping screws rather than standard nails to connect its elements. They are not subject to oxidation and do not wear out as a result of exposure to precipitation.

Instructions for making a wooden staircase

After preparation building materials, tools, you can start making the stairs. The side boards of the product must be as wide as possible to prevent mechanical damage to the roofing covering (the entire load is in in this case will be distributed evenly over the roof surface).

Important! The wooden building materials used must be impregnated with special protective agents against insects and natural precipitation, then the service life of the staircase will increase several times.

  • The length of the staircase structure should be approximately 80 percent of the length of the roof. To make steps, it is recommended to take a wooden beam measuring 40x40 mm.
  • Using a construction tape, the side boards of the product are marked and then cut hand saw or a jigsaw. The edges must be sanded for safety purposes.
  • Next, these blanks need to be placed parallel to each other (prepared for installing the steps).
  • You can use nails to fasten the steps, but as mentioned above, it is better to use hardened self-tapping screws. If the second option is used, then holes must first be made in the workpieces to prevent cracking of the building material. When the ladders are attached to the side boards, the entire staircase structure is thoroughly sanded. This is necessary in order to remove all sharp ends on the product and, accordingly, prevent damage to the roofing covering (this especially applies to soft roofs).
  • Next, to fix the ladder for the roof, a special hook is made, which will go to the opposite side of the roof. This is the most critical stage, since the finished hook will have to withstand the load of the staircase structure itself + the person who will carry out the work roofing. The design of the hook is similar to the design of the ladder itself, only its length is much shorter - from 30 cm. It should be borne in mind that the longer the hook, the more reliable it will be.

There is another option for attaching a wooden ladder to the roof of a house - by the ridge. To do this, corners are first mounted on the staircase structure (screwed onto the side boards of the staircase). Next, these corners are screwed to the roof ridge using metal screws. This option for attaching a ladder to the roof is considered more reliable and safe for roofing work.

The basic rule for using a roof ladder

All fastenings of the staircase structure and the hook must be periodically checked for weakening and looseness. If such situations arise, the product should be moved to a new location and securely fastened to prevent possible injury to a person during maintenance or repair of the roof.
