  • Made of concrete. This version of decorative stone is the most popular and is made from several materials. Sand, cement, various dyes, as well as reinforcing agents are used for production.
  • From porcelain stoneware. Stone is often used to decorate inner part walls or doorway. The composition contains clay, minerals, and dyes. For the strength of products and their stability, they are used different types clay. After which the substance is pressed and fired. This material visually resembles stone, but its composition is completely different. Porcelain tiles can withstand damage as well as temperature changes. It is better to exclude this finishing option for masonry in the kitchen opening; cleaning the stains will be problematic.
  • Conglomerate. The material is highly durable, the decorative stone is reliable and the parts are used to make decor interior walls and openings. The composition contains marble, granite and other elements. Visually, this material resembles a real agglomerate. You can paste a similar material over a doorway with outside buildings because it is strong and durable. The conglomerate is not susceptible to frost and temperature, has a low mass, and the work can be carried out on its own.

  • Acrylic. Practical look stones for decorating openings. Often used for lining doors to the living room and bedroom. This material has very good technical properties, and the structure will resist damage. Even if there is mechanical impact, acrylic stone will not change its shape. The upper part of the material can be easily washed without resorting to expensive products. The products are light in weight and easy to process. The composition does not contain harmful and toxic elements, which means it is recommended for masonry in a nursery or bedroom.
  • Quartz. The material is used quite rarely and is not in demand like other types. This cladding is quite durable and has a long service life.
  • Plaster. Also popular as concrete material, but demand is constantly growing. The mass is small, installation can be carried out directly on drywall, visually very beautiful. No moisture enters, gypsum does not burn and does not change shape under load, the material is easy to cover openings, doors and walls, visually similar to sandstone, and the work is easy to carry out independently.

First you need to remove the door and trim and only then begin finishing. The glue or solution should be mixed according to the instructions on the package. After that, apply it to the wall and leave for 10 seconds, then apply the necessary material.

An adhesive solution is also applied to the product itself. The tile is pressed against the wall, and all other parts must be adjusted to the level. This simple rule is used for the rest of the masonry. Sheathing is very simple, because you don’t even need beacons or other accessories.

When the edging is completed and the rectangular opening takes on the desired appearance, any chips or joints that may have appeared should be covered with grease. The lubricant itself must be correctly selected in color. This design move allows you to decorate not only the entrance to the house; you can make a corridor and other rooms out of stone, complementing the existing design. How to sheathe a corner is presented in the video above, and in the photo above you can see the final result of the opening.

Decorating with decorative stone allows you to highlight the arched opening against the background of the wall
  • Cladding openings that do not have installed door leaves, necessary on both sides, taking into account slopes. This will create a smooth transition.
  • For work in small spaces, for example, hallways - additional stone framing of other structures (shelves, mirrors) should be done. This method will create a complete composition and also emphasize a single design concept.

Knowledge of the features of working with decorative stone allows you to create a unique interior

Of course, such advice allows you to complete the work with the highest quality, but it must be borne in mind that only by using your imagination can you achieve complete individuality.

Installation work

It should be borne in mind that doors made of stone, or rather, their surrounding areas, can turn out beautiful and durable only when all work is carried out completely according to the rules. The whole process can be divided into several stages.

Preparation

All work starts with preliminary preparation. Indeed, the material does not imply ideal surface leveling, but a number of procedures must be performed:

  1. The old coating (paint, wallpaper) is completely removed. It should be borne in mind that in order to obtain a uniform surface, sometimes it is necessary to remove part of the plaster. This depends on the thickness of the selected product.
  2. Primer is applied. For work, a composition with a deep penetrating effect is used. It will create the best adhesion.
  3. The stone is first laid out on the floor. Compiled desired scheme drawing. This technology will avoid docking problems.
  4. If there is not enough experience, then preliminary marking is performed.

Preparatory work before laying decorative stone

Of course, if required, alignment is performed. It is advisable to obtain a coating that will be reliable enough for further work.

Note! The stone is laid on the areas of the doorway using adhesive composition. For this purpose, a solution is used, which is prepared in small portions immediately at the time of lining. It should be borne in mind that the mixture quickly loses its qualities and becomes unsuitable.

Seam finishing

The suture method is great for covering a door with stone. This option involves the following technology:

  • The prepared mixture is applied to the selected area. To do this, use a notched trowel, which distributes the composition well over the surface.
  • Facing starts from bottom corner opening. Although some finishers advise starting laying from the top, in this case it is necessary to make changes so that the stone does not slide down.
  • The fragment is placed in place and pressed down. Subsequent elements are installed after creating the seam. Its size is determined solely by what is desired. visual effect. Pieces of plywood, MDF, and plastic can be used as spacers.

The use of spacers allows you to create a beautiful and even seam
  • The greatest attention should be paid to the corners. Especially when general finishing of openings (walls and slopes) is carried out. There are two options for their formation:
    • Direct laying. The cladding is done by laying the fragments perpendicular to each other. To do this, you need to trim off the protruding excess and process the edges (sand and tint).
    • Cutting at an angle of 45 degrees. This is very complex technology. It consists in the fact that each fragment is first adjusted, and then its edges are cut at an angle.
  • All fragments are laid out according to the existing plan.
  • After the material has dried, you need to work on the seams. To seal them, a jointing compound is used, which is prepared in the required quantity.

The most successful option looks when the color of the joints is chosen in a different tone. To apply the composition it is used plastic bag. It is filled with the prepared solution, one corner is cut off. The mixture is squeezed out in the required quantity.

Note! To obtain a rough surface closer to natural look, use a brush with hard bristles.

Seamless installation

This option is used when it is necessary to form a homogeneous, monolithic surface. This technology allows you to achieve excellent results. The work is done quite quickly, but requires special care. General procedure is:

  • The adhesive composition is applied to the reverse side of the artificial stone.
  • It is necessary to avoid the appearance of excess. But if this happens, they are immediately removed.
  • Finishing is done from bottom to top or top to bottom. If the second option is used, then a reinforcing profile should be additionally installed, which will prevent the fragments from slipping. In addition, it is necessary to wait some time to allow the surfaces to adhere.

The final stage is to coat the surface protective compounds. This is especially important when finishing is done near front door.

The front door area is the calling card of the entire house and its beautiful design plays an important role. The construction market offers a huge number of ideas for decorating doorways. One of the most popular methods is finishing the front door with decorative stone.

Decorative stone is an artificial analogue of a natural material.

Its great demand in the market is due to a number of significant advantages:

  • light weight;
  • durability of use;
  • strength;
  • resistance to high and low temperatures;
  • resistance to high humidity;
  • ease of care;
  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • simplicity of installation and restoration technology;
  • aesthetic appearance;
  • a wide selection of different shades and textures.

It is worth noting that this material is moisture resistant, which is very important. Since, in cold weather, the slope from the inside releases strong condensation.

How to choose the right decorative stone for cladding

The positive properties of such material appear only in high-quality products.

To make the right choice, you should adhere to several rules:

  1. It is better to buy a stone that is more similar to natural material. It will be better if the palette consists of only a few shades.
  2. Pay attention to the outside of the product. The presence of chips, cracks, voids and stains from dye is possible, but damage of more than 5 mm is not allowed.
  3. The reverse side should be rough to the touch and have grooves, or the adhesive for gluing the material should have increased adhesion. This is important for strong adhesion to the surface.
  4. The structure of the stone must be uniform and dense. The presence of large particles in the material significantly reduces the strength.
  5. You should not purchase products that require additional processing protective agents (such materials include all natural stones).

Features of laying decorative stone

Decorating the front door with decorative stone is reminiscent of the process of working with a simple ceramic tiles. The main difference is in the fastening options; you can use glue, sealant or liquid nails. In addition, the surface for cladding does not require careful leveling and processing. This greatly simplifies the whole process and makes it possible for even a beginner to do the job efficiently.

When decorating a door, you need to take into account several nuances. For example, for the harmony of the whole work, the lower part of the cladding should be made somewhat more massive than the upper. Sharp color transitions should be avoided and the stone layout should be symmetrical. To begin with, it is worth laying out the intended drawing on a horizontal surface. This will help identify all the flaws and create the perfect picture.

It is worth noting that decorative option designs with uneven edges look more natural and original.

Note! Finishing can be done both inside and outside the house, provided that the stone is water and frost-resistant.

Main stages of work

Self-finishing doors with decorative stone involves several stages of cladding. To begin with, you should do preparatory work. They include preparation necessary tools, material and surface treatment. For work you will need materials such as a primer, acrylic varnish and tinting paste. The tools needed are a spatula, a stiff brush, brushes or rollers, a sprayer, building level, plumb bob and file.

The working surface is cleaned of the old coating, then rubbed and puttied in uneven places. It will be more effective to prime the surface and apply a layer of concrete contact (special construction chemicals to prepare the surface for laying materials). This will significantly increase the adhesion of the surface to the material and extend its service life. The material itself is laid out in a pattern on a horizontal surface. At this stage, you need to select the appropriate shades and size of the tiles.

Please note that finishing the slopes of the front door with decorative stone is similar to the work for the outer part of the doorway.

The installation process itself can be divided into several working stages:

  1. On work surface or the material is applied with glue. The slabs are applied to the surface, starting only from the bottom corner. Using a level and slope, the evenness of the masonry is controlled.
  2. The corners are laid end to end. Or stone fragments are cut at 45 degrees.
  3. After covering the entire surface, you need to wait until the glue has completely dried and remove the excess with a stiff brush.
  4. For a more aesthetic appearance, the stones are coated with a special composition. Which consists of coloring paste, acrylic varnish, water and applied using a sprayer.
  5. The last to be installed are baseboards and trim.

Pay attention! Such material should not be glued to wallpaper, as it will quickly begin to fall off. If you are renovating the entire room, then the stones are laid first. Or the required area is simply cleared of wallpaper.

The entire installation process can be done even by a novice master. To understand all the nuances more specifically, just watch a video of the work process.

Decorative stone finishing methods

There are two ways to decorate the front door with decorative stone: suture and seamless.

The first method involves cladding with gaps from 3 to 8 mm. Such seams are made smooth and at the end of the work they are filled with a special sealant. Fill the seams using a simple bag with a cut corner. The grout can be selected to match the color of the material or a contrasting option. Depending on your choice, you may get different end results. For example, play on contrast and add brightness and solemnity to the decoration.

Please note that a stone with a structured surface must be cleaned of grout very quickly; if this is not done, then wiping it out of the depressions and grooves of the stone will be problematic

The seamless method requires a more careful approach. To work, it is necessary to install a limiting profile and lay the material without gaps. The result of this method should be a monolithic surface. Glue for this method is applied exclusively to the tiles.

This is important! Excess glue in this method, should be removed immediately and not allowed to dry out.

By choosing to decorate your front door with decorative stone, you will not be disappointed. This is a great way to improve your home while maintaining the family budget. The large number of options offered makes it possible to choose the material for any design and interior. Soft shades of stone will bring additional warmth and comfort to the atmosphere, while darker shades will create the illusion of reliability and strength of the house. Simple finishing It will be suitable even for beginners in this matter.

A durable front door is a guarantee of peace of mind for the owners. But appearance is no less important than its security qualities. Immediately after installing the front door, the question arises: how to improve the slopes? There are many options, but I will focus on finishing the slopes of the front door with artificial stone.

Gypsum stone has a large number of options, both in relief and type of stone, and in the thickness of the tiles. For this work, I used thin-layer slate gypsum stone with a thickness of each tile from 2 to 2.5 cm, depending on the relief in a particular place. The slopes of the front door were level cement plaster. On level ground cement screed You can lay stone without prior putty.

First, the areas near the front door where the artificial stone will be installed were primed. Then, gradually, from the bottom, I began to lay the tiles on gypsum putty diluted to the thickness of the cream. When I reached the corner, I simply sawed the stone to the required size with a hacksaw. If there are corner elements, lining the door with decorative stone turns out much more beautiful than connecting relief stone at the corners different tiles. The photo shows that this corner element is precisely cut out according to the relief and looks complete.

WITH outside The walls were wallpapered. Stone cannot be laid on wallpaper, so I simply cut off pieces of wallpaper with a utility knife and mounted sawn pieces of stone onto the resulting areas. It turned out like a torn stone on the slopes. I carefully rubbed the seams at the connecting points with gypsum putty, trying not to interfere with the general relief.

After drying, the stone needed to be painted. I did this using stone varnish, which I tinted in chocolate color. I applied it with a brush and immediately, until the varnish was absorbed, I wiped off the protruding areas with a damp sponge. Plaster absorbs quickly, so this must be done immediately. The result was a very ancient-looking stone, as if weathered by time.

Lining the inside of the entrance door with artificial stone can be done with either gypsum stone or cement stone. The main thing is that the cement stone is not too massive and does not look rough. And in this case, it is necessary to cover the slopes of the front door using tile adhesive rather than gypsum putty. This way the adhesion of the materials will be better, and the stone around the door will last for many years.
