What is a “warm floor”?

A warm floor is a room heating system in which the heating elements are located deep in the floor and do not require the installation of radiators. The technology is relatively new, but it is quite possible to make a warm floor on a loggia with your own hands.

Today there are three known floor heating systems with different coolants:

  1. Water heated floor;
  2. Electric heated floor has two subsystems:
  • Cable
  • Heating mats
  1. Film (infrared) heated floor.

In a water heated floor, as the name implies, hot water is used.

Despite its apparent simplicity, this option can be implemented in apartment buildings not suitable for the following reasons:

  • in the heating system the coolant temperature is 90°, for heated floors no higher than 40° is required;
  • coolant pipes laid on insulation and embedded in a screed whose thickness is 20-30 mm greater than the diameter of the pipes will significantly raise the floor level. It is impossible to maintain the clear height from floor to ceiling of 2.4 m required by the standards with a floor height of 2.8 m without taking into account the thickness of the ceiling;
  • To connect to the heating system, permission from the housing authority is required;
  • If you manage to obtain such permission, and the ceiling height allows you to make a warm water floor, you will need a complex system for regulating the temperature of the coolant, and the heated floor will only be warm during the heating season!

If your goal is to install a heated water floor on the balcony in a cottage with an individual water heating system, then this system is optimal.

Electric heated floors are easier to implement. With minimal electricity consumption, its device does not require permits. Difficulties may arise when laying cables, but installation of heating mats is simple and accessible to a person without builder skills.

Film heated flooring is even easier to make; it does not require screed. Heating films are placed in a layer of tile adhesive (if the floor covering is tiles), or covered with a backing (in the case of a laminate flooring).

Infrared floors are not much more expensive than heating mats. Cable floors are cheaper than mats, but a thick screed is required, which is an additional waste of money and time, since the screed takes time to mature.

Floor insulation is a necessary preliminary stage

We begin the work of laying heated floors of any system by insulating the concrete slab of the balcony or loggia. This step is necessary if you do not want to heat the street along with the floor. Even if the neighbors below have insulated their balcony, insulating yours is still necessary. You will need materials:

  1. Several solid bricks;
  2. Vapor barrier material;
  3. Insulation;
  4. Cement-sand mortar for masonry;
  5. Wooden beam with a section of 50x50 mm;
  6. For the subfloor - moisture-resistant wood-shaving, wood-fiber or cement-bonded particle board;
  7. Level;
  8. Self-tapping screws.

At this stage, you are making a warm floor on a loggia or balcony - the difference is small: from the point of view of material consumption for the loggia, you do not need brick and mortar - there is a wall around the perimeter from the very beginning.

We begin laying the heated floor on the balcony by laying a brick side along the outer edge of the slab. We place the brick on the mortar on its edge, the side is 130 mm high (120 - brick and 10 mm mortar). After 3-4 days, when the solution has set, we place a layer of vapor barrier on the cleaned, washed and dried base. The vapor barrier protects the insulation from absorbing moisture from the air; wet insulation does not work.

A special one is used as a vapor barrier non-woven material– geotextiles or rolled bitumen-polymer materials (technoelast, uniflex). A budget option is polyethylene film.

It is not recommended to use materials such as roofing felt (cardboard impregnated with bitumen), roofing felt (leather or fabric impregnated with bitumen), glassine (kraft paper impregnated with bitumen) for vapor barrier - they last up to 5 years, and they are only permissible in temporary structures . The vapor barrier is laid dry.

On top of the vapor barrier, we build a frame from timber on self-tapping screws, the frame cell is no larger than 60x60 cm. The timber for the frame must be antiseptic (protected from rotting in a humid environment) and impregnated with a fire retardant (fire protection). Using wedges made of wood or chipboard, we bring the frame to the horizontal level at the building level. We put insulation into the cells of the frame.

As insulation we use slabs based on stone (basalt) wool - effective lightweight material with excellent thermal characteristics, 50 mm thick. How budget option– slabs made of extruded polystyrene foam grade 35. The insulation has zero water absorption, low density and thermal conductivity. Both materials belong to the non-flammable group. We cover the insulation with another layer of vapor barrier, which we fasten to the frame with a stapler.

We lay a subfloor on the frame - cement-fiber, wood-shaving or wood-fiber moisture-resistant boards, and fasten them to the frame with self-tapping screws. If you have chosen a water or cable heating system, the heating elements of which are placed in a screed, we recommend using a cement-bonded particle board for the subfloor, as it is the most resistant to moisture.

The insulation is complete, we proceed to the installation of the heated floor.

How to make a water heated floor on a balcony? Having purchased the required materials -

  • coolant pipes,
  • foil gasket,
  • temperature sensor,
  • thermostat,
  • dry mortar mixture for screed,
  • vapor barrier,
  • damper tape -

let's get to work. The technology for making a water heated floor on a balcony is not complicated, but there are some subtleties:

  1. a foil insulating pad is spread over the subfloor to reflect the upward flow of heat;
  2. if a warm baseboard is planned, a groove is made in the wall around the perimeter of the balcony for the coolant pipe at the level of the finished floor;
  3. the coolant pipes are laid out with a gap of 30-40 cm and connected to the collector;
  4. we place the temperature sensor, mount the thermostat on the wall in an accessible place;
  5. A damper tape is glued around the perimeter of the wall to compensate thermal expansion screeds for temperature changes;
  6. perform a screed - pour a solution of light, fine-grained concrete or another recommended by the manufacturer of the floor system. The screed must be uniform, without voids, and 20-30 mm high than the diameter of the coolant pipes. The air is expelled with a brush. The horizontal line is checked using beacons. The screed is left for 3-4 weeks to mature;
  7. cover the screed with a layer of vapor barrier;
  8. lay a clean floor.

For a water heated floor on a balcony or loggia, a ceramic tile coating is ideal; a laminate can be laid that is approved by the manufacturer for use for a water heated floor.

The covering of a water heated floor can be linoleum or carpet.

If you want a warm baseboard, to install the coolant pipe you need to make a groove in the wall around the perimeter of the loggia or balcony, otherwise the insulated baseboard will protrude from the plane of the wall by 80-100 mm. Electric heated floor on the balcony

Installing an electric heated floor is easier than installing a water one. Here, such stringent conditions are not imposed when pouring the screed, and the screed itself is thinner. Main stages:

  1. Laying a foil pad that reflects heat.
  2. Layout of heating cable or mats according to the manufacturer's instructions, installation of the system under a warm baseboard;
  3. Installation of a temperature sensor and thermostat, connecting the supply and return cables to the power supply system.
  4. Gluing damper tape around the perimeter of the walls;
  5. Filling the screed with a light mortar, 15-20 mm thick, along the beacons, forcing out the air.
  6. Cleaning floors and baseboards.

For an electric heated floor on a loggia or balcony, any material is suitable as a covering: ceramic tiles, natural stone, laminate, linoleum - it all depends on the taste of the owner.

Preparatory work

First you need to remove all layers of old flooring from the balcony. Only clean concrete should remain. The surface must be cleaned of dirt and dust so that all layers of the future floor can be installed perfectly.

To install an electric heated floor, it is necessary to obtain a flat and insulated surface. Therefore, it is necessary to make a subfloor that will accommodate a layer of insulation. The subfloor must be high enough, but not violate the following technical requirements:

  • the step between the room and the balcony should not exceed 15 cm;
  • the total height of the balcony must be more than 2.4 meters;
  • the height of the balcony fence must be at least 1 meter;
  • if there are small children in the house, the minimum height of the fence increases to 1.5 meters.

After completing the insulation work, the balcony fencing can be extended. However, you should not make the subfloor too high. This will reduce its durability and make using the balcony not very convenient for apartment residents.

Insulation of the base of the balcony

On concrete base For the balcony, screw the transverse beams from timber at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other. They do not need to be leveled in height, since the longitudinal beams will be responsible for the evenness of the floor.

Then screw the longitudinal beams to the transverse beams - after 25-30 centimeters. Select the highest point on the longitudinal beams and level the entire floor using wedges or pieces of chipboard. When placing them under the beams, make the base of the floor as level as possible.

The entire space between the beams must be filled with insulation. Suitable, for example, mineral wool.

Lay on the finished floor base chipboard sheets. You cannot use simple plywood or boards here. Peculiarities of floor operation will quickly render the boards unusable. The chipboard is screwed to the longitudinal beams using self-tapping screws.

Electrical cable installation

The next step in preparing the heated floor is installing the electrical cable. A special heat cable is laid in a “snake” pattern, and the laying pitch (the distance between cable turns) must be calculated in each individual case.

Connecting a heated floor

The cable is fixed to a special mounting tape, laid in a snake along the entire future floor of the balcony. Then the heat cable is connected through the thermostat to the network. This device is necessary to regulate the heating of the heated floor.

An excellent option is a concrete screed, since this material is an excellent heat accumulator. If you are going to start a long process related to obtaining a permit and spend money on installation, then it is better to do it reliably and professionally.

Pay attention! First, they always install windows and insulate walls, and only then lay floors, including warm ones. But the installation of floors always precedes the finishing of walls. The same applies to ceiling work.

It is necessary that the base, that is, directly reinforced concrete slab, was perfectly smooth. Remember: on balconies and loggias, from the very beginning the slab is tilted slightly towards the street so that water drains.


This essentially does not create any obstacles for installation. The main thing is that the slab must be perfectly flat, without depressions or bumps. Although, if you still need to fill the screed for leveling, it is better to immediately place it horizontally.

After the lower concrete base has been leveled, waterproofing is laid over it. The floor can be covered with a layer of technical polyethylene - it is inexpensive and takes a minimum of time. Before laying, you can put a soft spring on the pipe, slightly larger in diameter than the pipe itself. This will allow the metal-plastic pipe not to break at bends.

If you are laying metal-plastic pipe, use only the seamless option. It’s better to double-check the seller’s words and see for yourself the quality of the material. To do this, simply cut a little of the tube and remove the layer of plastic on top. The harder it is for you to do this, the more reliable the product.
