Making a foundation for a greenhouse

The finished greenhouse made from frames will weigh quite a lot, so it is necessary to make a separate foundation for it. We will build a full-fledged column-type support.

First step. Clearing the construction site. We remove garbage, uproot stumps and bushes, weeds, etc.

Second step. For convenience, we mark the site according to the size of the future greenhouse. We drive pegs into the ground around the perimeter and in the corners and stretch a rope between them.

Third step. In the corners and at three-meter intervals along each side of the greenhouse, dig holes half a meter deep. In a good way, the depth of each such hole should exceed the freezing level of the soil.

Fourth step. We fill the bottom of the holes with about a 10-centimeter layer of crushed stone and compact it thoroughly.

Fifth step. We make formwork. It is needed if the columns will be filled with concrete. The simplest option is to install a hollow pipe with a diameter of 10-15 cm in each hole (asbestos-cement pipes are suitable), level them, insert reinforcement, fix the structure (can be lined with bricks) and fill it with concrete.

Also, support pillars can be built from bricks or stones, using ordinary cement-sand mortar to fasten the elements.



Sixth step. We lay timber on top of the supports. At the corners we fasten the beams with iron plates. We attach the timber directly to the supports in a suitable way, for example, with anchors.

Building a greenhouse: a step-by-step guide

The structure in question can be built in different ways. First, we will describe the procedure for constructing a structure whose roof will be made of polyethylene, and at the end we will provide guidance on how to build a more durable frame. It can be covered with polycarbonate or other material.

The first stage - preparing the building material

Preparing window frames for work. We remove handles, hinges and other existing fittings.


We remove the old paint and treat the “bare” wood. At the same stage, it is recommended to temporarily remove the glass so as not to damage it during the process of fastening the frame elements.

We carefully seal the vents that will not be used in the greenhouse in the future. You can even dismantle parts of the frames with windows, if you like.

The presence of several opening windows is a big advantage - you don’t have to bother with arranging the ventilation system.

Stage two - laying the floor




We temporarily set the frames aside and begin arranging the floor. Our base is columnar, so there will be no difficulties in creating the floor.

First we provide drainage. If the water stagnates, the wooden elements of the structure will begin to rot.

To equip the drainage system, we dig a trench about 150 mm deep and fill it with fine crushed stone or gravel to about 5-7 cm. We fill another 3-5 cm of the trench height with sand and compact it thoroughly.

Important! The filling must be done so that the finished surface has a slight slope in the direction of the previously equipped drain hole.

To decorate the interior of the greenhouse, we install borders made of plastic or wood on the sides of the passages. Such a decorative element will simultaneously perform a functional task, preventing the earth from falling onto the path.

The third stage - building walls


First we build a frame for attaching the frames. We use high-quality wooden boards with a thickness of about 50 mm, approximately corresponding to the thickness of the window frames. From such boards we make the lower and upper trim. When arranging the lower perimeter, we use boards in 2 rows. Thanks to this, the finished greenhouse will be slightly taller.




We make vertical posts from timber. The best option is elements with a cross section of 150x150 mm. Such beams are guaranteed to withstand the weight of frames and related materials.

We attach the vertical posts to the support posts using a suitable method. We lay the bottom trim boards between the posts. We fasten the boards to the posts with self-tapping screws. We attach the frames with their long sides to the posts and boards of the lower trim. We use self-tapping screws.



We lay the top trim boards along the upper edges of the frames and racks. We also fasten it using self-tapping screws.

We fill the gaps between the frames and frame elements with polyurethane foam. For greater stability, we nail support bars to the inside of the frames.





Advice! To make the entire structure more stable, we include vertical supports in its composition. It is better to do them while forming the frame. To do this, we dig holes, install supports in them (a section of wood that will be in the ground is first wrapped in roofing felt or tarred) and pour cement or concrete. We fasten the supports to the vertical support posts using nails.

We check the structure again for any cracks. If we find any, we blow them out with foam. Only the vents for ventilation can be left free.

We put back the removed glass. Instead of glass, you can use other material, for example, polyethylene or cellular polycarbonate.



Important! If you plan to make a polycarbonate roof, it is better to install the glass after the roofing work is completed.

Stage four - making the roof

Most often, summer residents cover greenhouse frames with plastic film. In such a situation, the load on the frame and base will not exceed permissible standards, and the greenhouse will last as long as possible.





We construct a light sheathing along the upper perimeter of the greenhouse. It can be made from wooden slats, metal profiles and even wire.


Having installed the sheathing, we stretch the film. To secure it, it is most convenient to use special clamps and clamps.

If your budget allows you to purchase cellular polycarbonate for the roof, you can do it. Keep in mind that this design will require a fairly strong frame. For its manufacture, it is best to use profiled pipes, because... a wooden beam is unlikely to withstand such a load.

Nowadays, a lot of people are replacing old wooden windows with new plastic ones. In the vast majority of cases, old windows and glass are sent to a landfill. This trash is an excellent building material for building a greenhouse from frames with your own hands.

If you choose windows of the same size, then construction will not be difficult at all. If they are of different sizes, then you will have to try a little.

From old window frames you can build both a permanent and temporary greenhouse.

Temporary structure

Old window frames are wooden, so they will not last very long - 6-8 years. In order to build a temporary greenhouse from them, you do not need a special foundation.

It is enough to place a brick or wooden beam under them to prevent them from rotting too quickly. Our step-by-step instructions will help you assemble a temporary shelter.

Procedure

  1. We take out all the glass from the windows and clean them of rags of old paint.. We clog up all the windows that we don’t plan to use.

  2. We calculate the dimensions of the future building based on the available number of frames.
  3. We mark the boundaries of the future building using pegs and twine..

  1. We dig in bricks along the string so that the top edge of the brick is raised above ground level by 2-3 cm. We choose the digging step so that each frame rests on three bricks.
  2. We assemble the frame of the building from 50x50 mm timber. The height of the frame must be at least 170 cm. To reduce the cost of the structure, you can use a dry board with a thickness of at least 30 mm. The supporting columns of the frame should be positioned so that the joints of the windows fall on them.

  1. We fix the perimeter windows. They need to be nailed to the frame as often as possible to increase the strength of the structure.

We install the frames with the windows facing outwards, so that they do not open in the wind.

  1. Making the roof frame. Since we have a greenhouse without a cushion, it is not recommended to cover it with the same glass windows, so as not to increase the weight of the structure. There can be two roofing options - film or polycarbonate. Our structure is as budget-friendly as possible, so we are not considering the option of polycarbonate.
    The roof can be either single-pitched or double-pitched.
  • Single-pitch. To install it, we increase one side row of frames upward by 60-100 cm, depending on the width of the building. To do this, you may have to cut the frames and knock together windows of the required size.

Note!
The height difference for a film greenhouse should be approximately 25-30 cm for each meter of run length.

After this, the cross beams can be laid. They can be made from solid timber section 50x50 mm. You can also splice disassembled parts of windows, but then you will need to install supports.

The installation pitch of the rafters should be such that it is convenient to tension.
For example, if the film meter width, then the rafter installation step is 90 cm.

  • Gable. We lay crossbars made of 50x50 mm timber on top of the finished frame frame. From the same timber we make roof rafters, which we nail to the crossbars. The height difference from the roof ridge to the walls should be 50-70 cm. Along the top of the rafters, the rafters can be connected to each other with window trims.

To prevent the frame from moving apart under the weight of the roof and precipitation on it, it may be necessary to install supports under the cross beams.

  1. We hang entrance doors, fortunately there are enough various loops and latches exact amount.
  2. Carefully seal all cracks. It will be used construction foam, silicone sealant and even ordinary clay. In the latter case, the clay should be mixed with fluffy tow as a binding filler.
  3. Inserting glass into the side walls. If there is not enough glass, then these places can be filled with polyethylene or polycarbonate residues.
  4. We stretch the film onto the roof.
    In order for the film to sag as little as possible, the order of its tension should be as follows:
  • We cut pieces of film along the length of the roof with a margin of 40 cm;
  • If necessary, cut the pieces lengthwise;
  • We roll out the first piece over the roof so that the film hangs equally on both sides;
  • We nail one edge through the slats (glazing beads, shingles);
  • We stretch the film from the middle to the edges with a fold around the next rafter and fix it with nails or a stapler;
  • We repeat the operation with the following pieces.
  1. We fix the side edges of the roofing film through the slats.

The temporary greenhouse made from old frames is ready. This design is not suitable for use in winter period, so for the winter the film from the roof needs to be removed. Otherwise, not only the film may break, but the entire structure may collapse.

In order for a building to successfully withstand winter, a more serious approach is needed. The price of a capital structure is higher, however, the strength and reliability are several times higher.

Capital building

In order to build a permanent greenhouse from old window frames, you already need a foundation. A greenhouse made of frames standing on a concrete pad will last much longer, especially if you take care of the wood. Such a structure can already be covered with polycarbonate, or a roof can be made from the same window frames.

Sequence of work

There is nothing special about pouring the foundation for such a structure, so we will not dwell on it in detail. For a small greenhouse, a concrete pad the width and depth of a shovel will be sufficient. For a larger greenhouse, for example, 3x6m, the foundation depth is 45-50 cm, width 25-40 cm.

The edge needs to be raised above the ground by 10-15 cm. Pieces of corners along the long sides should be immediately concreted into it for subsequent fastening of the frames.

The corners should protrude from the concrete by 5-10 cm.

The foundation hardens in about a week or two.

After this, you can proceed directly to construction:

  1. We lay out square columns 170-180 cm high from brick at the corners of the foundation. The same columns can be laid along the long sides of the building so that 2-3 frames are placed between them.
  2. We prepare the frames for construction in the same way as in the case of a temporary structure.
  3. In the middle of the brick columns we make the upper and lower frame frames from 50x50 mm timber or boards at least 30 mm thick. We screw the bottom trim to the foundation corners.

Note!
The timber of the upper frame should lie on top of the posts, and the bottom – directly on the foundation.

  1. We assemble the side and end walls of the greenhouse in the same way as in the temporary shelter option.

  1. The roof is arranged in the same way. In the case of a lean-to greenhouse, the side posts should be increased to the required height.
  2. If the roof is made from old windows, then the distance between the roof rafters should be such that the glazing frames fit between them with a slight interference.
  3. Next, we hang the door and seal all the cracks.
  4. To make it convenient to walk, the central passage in the greenhouse can be deepened by 15-20 cm.

Which is better - a foundation or a foundation?

In professional construction, there is the concept of a foundation - a mass of soil capable of absorbing the load from a structure without deformation. But for this it is strengthened in various ways:

  • pneumatic rammer;
  • silicatization (introducing a solution of liquid glass into the soil layer);
  • cementation (injection of liquid cement mortar).

It is unrealistic and unprofitable to create a foundation strong enough for a heavy greenhouse on your own and without equipment. Therefore, based on your own considerations and material capabilities, you need to choose the material for the foundation. The following options are usually considered:

  • wooden beam;
  • bricks or blocks;
  • reinforced concrete.

Shell block construction

The timber is quickly installed, but it also rots quickly. It can and should be impregnated with resin or wrapped in roofing material, but these measures only briefly slow down the process. A base made of silicate or hollow bricks will not last long, and well-burnt clinker is expensive. It will not be much cheaper to buy foundation blocks, since the technology requires high-quality insulation and insulation, and this will also cost a pretty penny.

The timber lasts for 3–4 years

Some craftsmen manage to adapt railroad sleepers, car tires, and iron pipes into greenhouses. But shallow-depth is considered the most predictable and relatively cheap strip support made of concrete – service life at the right approach exceeds tens of years. Determine the width of the foundation strip according to the type of soil: 20 cm (for loams) or 25 cm (for sandy soils). At the previously selected location, remove the platform and mark:

  2. Pull the string from it at right angles and at the required distance determine the second and third angles - also mark them with pegs.
  3. From the second and third corners towards the fourth, pull the string and, having adjusted the corner, set the last mark.
  4. Check the resulting rectangle along the diagonals: they should be equal.
  5. In a similar way, mark inner circuit foundation.

Calculate the desired height foundation from the ground as the difference between the height of the window frames and the height of the greenhouse under construction along the floor beams. Mark the calculated size on the pegs and pull the string horizontally.

Now comes the turn earthworks. According to the markings, dig a trench 30 cm deep. The walls should be vertical; if the soil falls, install temporary supports. Check the bottom with a level and, at the slightest slope, level it to the horizontal. Pour sand into the finished trench in layers, pouring and compacting each layer. The thickness of the pillow is 15 cm.

  1. Assemble formwork from edged boards and timber.
  2. WITH outside install supports to prevent its deformation.
  3. Attach reinforcing rods with a diameter of 8–12 mm to the walls of the formwork and tie them together with wire.
  4. Mix cement grade 200 with sifted river sand in a ratio of 1:2 or 1:2.5 and dilute with water until it becomes liquid sour cream.
  5. Fill the resulting solution with crushed stone - its quantity is the same as sand.
  6. Mix the concrete and pour it into the formwork, compacting it in the process using improvised means, a hammer drill or a construction mixer.
  7. Level the top layer with a rule or trowel and sprinkle it with concrete sifted through a sieve.

The resulting foundation can subsequently be used for more than one greenhouse.

Installation of windows and frames

Dismantled windows should be prepared before reuse. Check their condition - dried wood cannot be restored and is not suitable for a greenhouse. Carefully remove old hinges, nails, latches from the frames - anything that is outdated or may interfere with installation. To avoid damaging the glass, temporarily remove:

  1. Remove the glazing beads from the window frame, pull out all the glass, marking them according to each opening.
  2. Wash glass panels with warm soapy water.
  3. Replace cracked glass and add new glass to replace missing glass.
  4. Use a blowtorch or paint remover to remove the old coating layer.
  5. If necessary, fill the uneven areas.
  6. Apply several layers of antiseptic and let the surface dry.
  7. Paint the frames exterior paint light color.

The most labor-intensive operation in building a greenhouse from old window frames with your own hands is building the frame. It is optimal if, after replacing the windows with metal-plastic double-glazed windows, the frames remaining are the same size. In this case, lay a sheet of roofing felt on the concrete foundation, and a beam of the lower trim on it. Then, one by one, use dowels to screw the frames to the foundation and tie them with posts and lintels for rigidity.

When installing frames of different sizes with a frame structure, you will have to tinker a little more:

  1. Place vertical pillars at the corners of the foundation same height, equal to the height of the largest frame and the width of the bottom trim beam.
  2. Rigidly install the top trim around the entire perimeter.
  3. Attach the first frame to it with three dowels, and leave its lower edge free.
  4. Install the second frame in the same way, but on the other side.
  5. Place the bottom beam into the gap between the frames and the foundation and attach it to the foundation and pillars.
  6. Cover the remaining uncovered space with a board according to its size - due to their location at the bottom, such inserts will not shade the greenhouse.

The nuances of building a greenhouse from wooden windows, positive and not so good, are discussed above. But increasingly, it happens that pioneer homeowners who were once the first to replace wooden frames to metal-plastic double-glazed windows, we already have to change them too. This means that such material can also fall into your hands. Upon closer examination, metal-plastic in its new “role” has its advantages and disadvantages.

However, not everything is so rosy - the windows are still intended for other purposes and have not been tested in greenhouse conditions. Especially many questions arise regarding recovery:

  • depressurized frames (one of the common reasons for replacement) are also unsuitable for greenhouses;
  • During installation, you cannot pull the glass out of the frames - there is a high risk of damage;
  • if the top frame and greenhouse roof are installed incorrectly, an uneven load is applied to the window frame, and the glass unit bursts;
  • It is impossible to replace broken glass “on the knee” - you need specialists and equipment.

The greenhouse itself turns out to be non-demountable and heavy - moving it to a new place with your own hands will be extremely problematic. If you have free plastic windows, then why not build a greenhouse out of them. But don't be tempted to buy specifically for this purpose: for the money you can find better specialized solutions.

If you decide to use double-glazed windows, remember: they are installed on bottom trim simultaneously with the installation of frame racks made of wooden beams or steel profiles (the latter option is more reliable). So, the task of how to make a greenhouse with your own hands from old window frames is almost solved. All that remains is to cover the structure and thereby protect the plantings from precipitation. There are three ways to do this:

  1. Using the same frames as for the walls is only acceptable for greenhouse boxes, since placing a heavy structure with glass over someone’s head is unsafe.
  2. Covering with film or spunbond is a simple and affordable solution. True, you will have to build a roof frame and remove the material for the winter.
  3. Install polycarbonate sheets - if there are no stocks. This option requires material costs, but no hail is terrible for the greenhouse, and it can be used indefinitely.

Decide on the shape of the roof - will it be arched or gable. An arched one lets in more sunlight, covering it with film or polycarbonate is a pleasure, but you need to stock up on a metal profile bent on a pipe bender. If you or someone you know does not have this device, switch to a gable roof, especially since you almost never need to remove snow from it.

To build a load-bearing roofing system with your own hands you will need:

  • ridge beam 5x5 cm of the same length as the constructed greenhouse;
  • timber 15x5 for rafters;
  • fasteners and consumables;
  • tools - hammer, saw, electric drill, tape measure, axe, plumb line.

The work algorithm looks like this:

  1. Treat lumber for roofing with impregnation. Dry.
  2. Based on the dimensions of the greenhouse and the pitch between the rafters (60–80 cm), calculate the required number of roof trusses. The roof inclination angle is 25–30 degrees.
  3. According to the dimensions, make the first truss from two rafter legs and lower screed. Make all the other trusses using the template.
  4. Install the trusses one by one on the top frame frame and secure them firmly on both sides with corners and self-tapping screws.

Now cut the polycarbonate and, having correctly oriented the canvases (with the stiffening ribs vertically and the side protected from UV rays up), secure them to the rafter system.
