Every apartment owner, before starting renovations, thinks about the style of the future interior. It is worth noting that style is not a fixed set of rules for creating an interior, but only a vector, a direction of movement of design thought. Each style has its own main features, recommended materials and characteristics, which cannot be neglected. But style gives enormous scope for imagination; it acts as the basis on which the design project of each unique interior grows.

There are a lot of interior styles. They are divided into classic styles, which appeared many hundreds of years ago, modern styles and ethnic styles characteristic of certain peoples.

Classic interior styles

Antique style

This style has become the basis and basis of many subsequent styles; modern designers often turn to its simple forms, harmonious combinations. This style is characterized by symmetry and simplicity.

Gothic style

High ceilings and big windows, active use stained glass windows and wood carvings - this style amazes with its sophistication and apparent simplicity. All interiors seem to strive upward, which is emphasized by lancet windows.

Classicism

This style combines pomp and restraint. Borrowing harmony and symmetry from the antique style, he expresses it in a completely different way, using expensive materials and massive solid wood furniture.

Baroque

Straight lines, maximum functionality and minimal decor are the main signs of constructivism. This style is very rational, so there are no “extra” accessories that do not bring practical benefit.

For a long time, this style was considered one of the variations of Art Nouveau, but was still distinguished separately. It combines smooth curves with straight lines and zigzags, and simplicity with luxury.

Pop Art

This style is designed to amaze and delight. Bright colors, contrasts, neon lighting and gloss - character traits interiors in pop art style. Another hallmark style - the use of existing objects and materials in a completely new role (often as art objects).

Minimalism

The main task of interiors in the minimalist style is to preserve free space. Transformable tables, a small number of accessories and the use of glass are clear signs of minimalism. The style is characterized sharp corners and straight lines.

Kitsch

Interiors in this style are a mixture of all famous styles, bright colors and imitations expensive materials. In German, “kitsch” means “bad taste,” but even this interior style has its place. A combination of different (sometimes not suitable friend to a friend) colors, accessories, materials and interior items gives the kitsch style a unique look. To live in an apartment decorated in this style, you will need not only determination and independence, but also psychological stability.

Neoclassical

Calm style perfect for decoration country houses. Harmony and pastel shades, symmetry and simplicity in this style are borrowed from antiquity. However, you are free to use modern materials, combining the requirements of style and your desires and capabilities.

High tech

Ultra-modernity and high-tech are the main parameters of the style. Outwardly cold and distant, it is filled with clear functionality. This is manifested not only in the abundance of technical innovations, but also in the use of modern materials and engineering structures.

Ethnic interior styles

African interior style

Perhaps the most vibrant and authentic of all ethnic styles. It is filled with the warmth (and even heat) of the sun and the colors of the desert. Various decorative items are actively used, reminiscent of the peoples of Africa, their crafts and hobbies. Natural materials (bamboo, leather, fur) are welcome, but they can also be replaced with a good imitation.

Japanese interior style

In its pure form, it is not very popular among Europeans, since it involves the use of a minimum of items and the lack of uniqueness and personalization of the interior. However, you can find partial use of the Japanese style very often. Natural materials predominate in the decoration of such interiors, light colors, minimal amount furniture.

Wall decoration should first of all be neat. This can be smooth wallpaper, or coverings with laconic patterns: stripes, monograms and other decorations. The ceiling, as a rule, is decorated, but if you do not like to make it heavier or your home is very heavy, you should treat the stucco molding and decor carefully, it is better to leave it smooth. The floor is usually wooden. Of course, natural parquet looks better, but if you want to save money, you can find a worthy replacement among budget laminate manufacturers.

Choose pastel colors to make the room look grand: beige, ivory and white work well. The latter is often used as the main one, for example in the color of the walls, and it is also used to highlight details: furniture, textiles, decor. Bright shades will help make the interior complete: you can use red, blue, indigo, violet and other “rich” colors.

The furniture should be massive, with textile or leather upholstery. Preferably made of wood, but this will require a large budget; you can also choose something more affordable made of artificial material.

2

The “Scandi” style, as fans call it, has come into fashion quite recently, but it seems to be here to stay. always minimalistic and budget-friendly, but at the same time homely and warm. The style is quite universal, there are no specific details, but there are many elements that will create comfort and coziness: light walls, minimalistic cushioned furniture, green plants, textiles and useful, but beautiful decor.

Design: Ahre Fastighetsbyrå

It is functionality that is reflected in Scandinavian style. Suffice it to recall the words of the Finnish designer Alvaro Aalto that an architect should make life more convenient - this is precisely the definition that applies to Scandi interiors.

Another one distinguishing feature This direction is naturalness. It is best if the room has furniture made of real wood and textiles made of linen, cotton or silk. Replace lifeless plastic chairs with wooden ones, even ones you put together yourself: rough, unhewn wood can become an interesting detail in your Scandi room.

Despite the minimalism, each interior should be individual; this property is brought by family photographs, hand-made accessories, and posters on the walls. It is important that this is not “decor for decor’s sake”, but useful thing, which reflects the character of the owners.

Despite the fact that in the Scandinavian style, light colors should prevail - white, light gray and soft blue - can add life to the interior.

3 Loft

It distinguishes extraordinary personalities, somewhat ascetics, lovers of freedom and space. It is in this direction that the individual characteristics of the owner can be emphasized, since the characteristic carelessness of the style allows imagination to run wild.

Despite the fact that a loft usually requires space, today it is also created in city apartments. It is advisable that the room is not the smallest and has enough high ceiling. Often two-level apartments in new buildings are decorated in a loft style.

Design: AMR Design

For a loft, the less finishing, the better. Ceilings and walls can be simply plastered, similar to ordinary gray concrete. Also this style loves brick - use decorative material, but better for one of the walls. Often the walls in such rooms are decorated, road signs or a basketball hoop - this is done to create sensations outer wall, raw and careless. Ventilation and pipes are also not hidden, but put on display, turning them into decorative elements.

Such interiors do not need a lot of furniture, because the main decoration is free space. Often furniture is also a subject for zoning. For example, a bookcase can become a partition between the bedroom and the kitchen, and a bar counter can become between the kitchen and the living room.

4 Contemporary style

Contemporary is simplicity, restraint and functionality. Due to the fact that artificial materials and simple shapes are used in the interiors of such rooms, it can be created on a small budget.

Correct placement of furniture and the absence of unnecessary details distinguish this style, for example, from country or pompous classics.

Design: Elizabeth Krueger Design

Contemporary style “loves” subdued colors(light beige, milky, gray and white) and modern materials. For finishing the floor, you can use laminate or plain carpet covering.

Furniture - only functional and simple shapes. It should be comfortable and fit into the space, not create a feeling of clutter and not look too massive.

Don't forget about accessories, as they add life to the interior. You can use contrasting shades, but in moderation. Choose beautiful vases for flowers, hang a few paintings - this is all you can do.

5

Choose one different piece that will be in a different style: for example, chairs for lunch group or a chandelier.

Combine objects by shape. This will make it easier to combine different styles together.

12

It seems ascetic to many, but this does not negate its comfort and originality.

One of the criteria for success Mediterranean style - correct finishing. The simpler the better, style dictates this rule. And it is advisable to choose natural materials. Perhaps the most typical solution for walls would be light decorative plaster. Wood or tiles are usually placed on the floor (if it is a kitchen or hallway). Carpets will not fit into such an interior, unless they are small mats.

The choice of color in a Mediterranean-style room needs to be taken seriously. Pastel shades and clean colors are desirable White color. Designers distinguish several approaches: Greek and Italian. In the first case, they often play on contrasts, diluting the white with bright accessories. Additional colors must be natural: green, brown, blue or light blue, lavender and the like. The Italian approach is characterized by smoothness and monochrome; it is often based on Brown color and complement it with olive, gray or pale yellow.

Wood is one of the main materials of the Mediterranean style. Stylish furniture correct forms without elaborate carvings, it is very suitable for such an interior.

Textiles will help add luxury to an ascetic room, especially a bedroom: pillows, sheets, bedspreads, embroidered with shiny threads or beads. The room will look charming and stylish.

However, even if you are not considering the possibility of ordering a design project from specialists, but plan to do everything “with your own hands,” then understanding the styles will still be useful to you, since it will give you some idea of the existing methods and techniques, and may also tell you some interesting ideas.

We have prepared this article to help you navigate the existing variety of interior design styles, to give you a very general understanding of the issue. The article does not pretend to be scientific, but is of a very applied nature. Yes, we agree, art scholars are unlikely to approve of the classification we propose here. However, we can safely say that if you understand and use the classification proposed in this article, you will be correctly understood by professional practicing designers interior design and other specialists representing the field of applied design.

When planning to order an interior design project for an apartment or a separate room from a professional interior design studio, it is very important to navigate existing styles so that you can explain your preferences and wishes to the designer as accurately as possible.

We have combined all the variety of styles into the following conditional groups:

Let's take a closer look at these groups and consider the most characteristic styles in each of them.

Academic classics in interior design

Academic classics will appeal to wealthy customers who prefer solidity in the interior, respectability and stylish luxury. Common features of interiors made in the styles of this group are:

  • symmetry of the room,
  • widespread use of wall and ceiling decor,
  • ornaments complex shapes, wall hangings,
  • expensive (to the point of luxurious) upholstered furniture, framed paintings.

Ceilings and walls must be decorated with stucco and borders, large hanging chandeliers, as well as wall and floor lamps made of glass or crystal, column elements are widely used. The floor of classical rooms is almost always laid with parquet, including, often, with complex patterns.

It can be said that classic interior is a tribute to the eternal, imperishable standards of beauty and well-being. At the same time, it goes well with individual modern techniques. The main thing here is to choose well Appliances so that metal and glass do not argue with natural wood and skin, but only emphasized their nobility.

The color scheme can range from white to dark brown; all shades of beige, green, soft tones of pink and blue, as well as gilded ornaments are popular. Classic interiors replete with accessories and rich decorations: mirrors in figured baguettes, statues and sculptures, carved legs at chairs and tables. Their aesthetics are drawn to the ancient canons of beauty and luxury of room decoration.

The most common styles in the “Academic Classics” group:

  • baroque,
  • rococo,
  • classicism,
  • empire style,
  • Gothic,
  • and so on.

Alternative classics in interior design

In the group of interior design styles related to alternative classics, some mixtures of styles are allowed, used to achieve the greatest functionality of details that at first glance relate to luxury items.

Classical motifs are preserved, carpets and parquet flooring with unusual patterns are popular, all furniture is made from expensive materials, but gilding in its decor is much less common. We can say that “alternative classics” is a lighter, less pompous, more modern and dynamic form of “academic classics”. She seeks a compromise between modern and traditional room design. The design of apartments made in these styles, appealing to the classical canons of interior aesthetics, meets modern requirements ergonomics and high functionality.

When working on such projects, we combine natural, classic and modern materials, including the now popular chrome and mirror surfaces. Color solutions vary from white to black, covering all shades of beige and pastel colors, bright colors are allowed color accents.

Among the styles in this line we highlight:

  • american classic,
  • English style,
  • "lite" classic,
  • art deco (art deco),
  • Art Nouveau (Art Nouveau) and others.

Design projects of apartments or country houses in any of the styles of the lines " academic classics" and "alternative classics" are difficult to develop, as they require careful study of many decorative elements, and therefore the cost of such work is always higher. Moreover, furniture elements, accessories and decor of such interiors are often much more expensive than others, so if you want to order an interior design in a classic style, you need to take into account that bringing this idea to life will not be very cheap, but everything will look accordingly invested funds.

Style group " provincial Europe (Provence) in the interior»

Provence group styles(we called them “provincial Europe”) will appeal to those who gravitate towards nature, natural materials and simple, sometimes deliberately rough finishes, and an abundance of natural light.

The rooms of these styles in general are as follows: the decor of the walls is minimal, mosaic panels, paintings and photographs of simple scenes in modest frames are acceptable, on the ceiling there are protruding ceilings in the form of beams made of natural materials, and on the floor there are tiles or solid boards. Stone, wood, glass and ceramics are used. The furniture chosen is not burdened with ornaments and made from natural materials (wooden or wicker), preferably antique or specially aged. From decor - only carved elements, nothing superfluous or artificial.

The colors are also as close to natural as possible - warm, sunny shades of yellow, green and orange alternate with cool blue and turquoise colors, white is used throughout.

We included the following styles in this group:

  • Provence,
  • Tuscan style,
  • Mediterranean style.

Modern styles in interior design

Modern styles, despite their name, they originated at the turn of the 19th century in connection with the active development of science and the penetration of knowledge-intensive and futuristic elements into interior design. Apartment design in a modern style is usually ordered by dynamic people with a rational type of thinking. The main stylistic features of modern interiors are laconic forms, high functionality of elements, bold color solutions, emphasized volume of space and non-standard solutions lighting.

Modern interiors trample the classical laws of design and appeal to the manufacturability of the future. The predominant materials are glass, metal and plastic. Strict geometric shapes combined with calm, monochrome, or bright and contrasting colors. Decor and interior accessories are used with extreme care - everything is aimed at achieving the greatest functionality.

We included in the group of modern styles:

  • hi-tech (high-tech),
  • modern,
  • minimalism,
  • loft,
  • fusion,
  • pop Art,
  • and others like these.
