Story log houses dates back several centuries, they have passed all kinds of tests both by time and by people, and have proven their worth, although they also have some specific properties. Structures made of laminated veneer lumber in our country cannot boast of such an impressive track record and, despite their great popularity, are shrouded in a whole set of myths. IN this material We will talk about the most common “horror stories” associated with glue and the technology itself:

  • The technology is “young” - will the lamellas come apart?
  • How harmful is glue to health?
  • How effective is the glue? Will the timber “come apart” in a few years?

Will the lamellas in the timber come apart?

Glued laminated timber is produced by longitudinally gluing several wooden boards(lamellas), wood is used as raw material coniferous species. The characteristics of this material largely depend not only on the adhesive system, but also on the parameters of the lamellas. To prevent the timber from splitting into components over time, the lamellas must meet the following criteria.

Permissible humidity– the board after cutting (usually the lamella thickness is 50 mm) is dried to acceptable levels - 8-15%, but the humidity of adjacent lamellas should not differ by more than 4%. Exceeding these limits is fraught with cracking of the timber after the structure is assembled; the house will not fall apart, but the decorativeness and tightness will definitely suffer.

Quality of lamella preparation– after the initial calibration (minus 1-2 mm), before gluing, a final calibration must be performed on a planing machine; the output geometry must be almost ideal. The error allowed is no more than 0.1 mm per linear meter, “waves” or torn fibers are not acceptable.

If the equipment is worn out, with knives that are dull or sharpened but at the wrong angle, it will not be possible to process the lamella correctly.

Although when sawing, the tension between the wood fibers is removed, which allows finished timber avoid deformation; if the processing technology is violated, the quality of the seam may decrease.

Finish calibration before gluing is done for alignment geometric size along the entire length of the board so that the beam is of exact dimensions. This is important both for proper gluing and for subsequent cutting of laminated veneer lumber into parts of the house kit. Another 1-3 mm is removed. It is unrealistic to vouch for every house, but the technology itself has existed since the fifties; there are buildings (mainly for industrial and public purposes) from Soviet times that exist to this day. In Europe, test houses are located on the territory of one of the institutes, they have been monitored for more than fifty years. So far the “flight” is normal. What is characteristic is that these houses are specially made without antiseptic, since main idea research - to determine the behavior of glue joints, and not the wood itself.

It is interesting that in Switzerland, to this day, railway stations built from laminated veneer lumber back in 1910 are in operation, and in the building of the main station in Stockholm (1925) there are load-bearing units made of laminated veneer lumber, and the lamellas are glued together with a casein compound.

Is glue in timber harmful?

The production technology itself involves several adhesive seams in each beam, so potential consumers are most concerned about the environmental friendliness of the material. The timber is produced using various adhesive systems, but most often it is:

  • EPI – emulsion of polymers with isocyanate hardener;
  • MMF – melamine-formaldehyde;
  • PUR – polyurethane adhesive;
  • PVA is a polyvinyl acetate emulsion, prohibited for gluing house-building structures, as it loses strength under static load.

The adhesive systems used in the production of laminated veneer lumber undergo mandatory certification and are environmentally friendly, even if it is MMF. Any glue contains chemicals, but if the glue is of high quality, then all of it polymerizes (converts into solid) when gluing timber. The content of free formaldehyde in the timber will comply with domestic and European standards - EN 14080 and GOST 33122-14.

Unfortunately, it is neither tactile nor visually possible to check whether the manufacturer uses the high-quality glue stated in the documentation, or saves money and makes do with an uncertified system. Therefore, in addition to domestic SES certificates, the plant must also have a personal certificate of the glue manufacturer. The document will indicate that this particular company uses their glue, and that the staff is trained to work with the system. As with everything, when choosing laminated veneer lumber, the rule “trust, but verify” applies.

In order not to worry about the environment in the future, ask the manufacturer for Russian and foreign certificates for the glue used. It is quite easy to check a foreign certificate; it indicates the email addresses of the institutions that issued it. Even if you don’t speak the language, you can easily find information within a day, online translators to help, and find out whether such a certificate was issued.

Any remaining doubts can be resolved by asking for a tour of the enterprise, if this is geographically possible - copy the name off the label and check what the glue is.

Choosing glue for laminated timber

  1. - one of the most popular among Russian builders. The Dutch manufacturer managed to develop a composition that is easy to apply, dries quickly, and produces a durable seam. Taking care of safety, the creators of the glue of this brand ensured the absence of toxins; for many years the glue does not decompose and does not interfere with air microcirculation.

In addition to the well-known manufacturer Akzo Nobel, there are other proven compositions on the market.

  1. Homakol is a two-component EPI system designed to work with laminated wood for load-bearing structures, gluing furniture panels, windows, doors. It is odorless and has no volatile solvents.   • Resin-based adhesives are in demand among woodworkers and ordinary homeowners. Adhesive compositions of this type are not only not afraid of water, but are resistant to the influence of petroleum products and aggressive compounds.
