Preparing the walls
The walls must be properly prepared before gluing. We look at where there are strongly protruding bumps and knock them down. If the renovation is not large-scale and the plans do not include major leveling, then wallpaper with a chaotic pattern, but long straight lines will give away all the secrets.
If the unevenness is not too large, leveling is sufficient regular putty. Don’t forget to treat the walls before and after puttying with a primer, so the finish will be stronger. Wallpapering
All that remains is to apply the finishing coat. It is better to place wallpaper on the ceiling along a longitudinal line from the entrance, starting from the edge. Wallpaper is applied to the walls, first of all, where the entire strip will lie, and then they are pasted around the window and other places with slopes, shelves, and the like. Before you start gluing and after 3 days, you should not allow drafts in the room, otherwise all the wallpaper will come off the walls. Therefore, at this time, the rooms are not ventilated, windows and vents are not opened.
Pasting paper wallpaper is done as follows.
When smoothing, the joints are very easy to damage. To avoid this, place a thin rag or napkin under the roller. They will also absorb excess glue that comes out.

Features of paper wallpaper
Despite the popularity of non-woven, vinyl and liquid analogues, paper wallpaper remains quite in demand. Relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, they also have a large assortment - so everyone can choose exactly what they need.
Single layer. The simplest and inexpensive option, but also the least quality. Such wallpaper is only suitable for a rented apartment or as a solution for the first time.
Double-layer (duplex). Due to the second paper layer, the wallpaper gets wet less when applied, hides minor wall irregularities better, is more durable and lasts longer.
Embossed. Also two-layer wallpaper, but with a structural pattern that is repeated with paint - due to this, the wallpaper looks more voluminous, more interesting and more expensive than usual.
Moisture resistant. Due to impregnation with a special composition, such wallpapers do not get wet when hung, and they can also be wiped with a damp cloth.
Structural. Another option for two-layer wallpaper, but with wood shavings in the middle, which creates a beautiful three-dimensional relief.

Preparation
Before gluing paper wallpaper, it is important to prepare the walls. First you need to get rid of the old wallpaper. If they do not come off just like that, they need to be wetted and removed after a while with a spatula.
Some add it to water ammonia or soda, and then iron the wallpaper with a hot iron through gauze or cloth soaked in this solution. It is important to remove all unevenness and roughness, because paper wallpaper will not be able to hide these imperfections.
Therefore, after you remove the old wallpaper, you need to cover all the cracks with putty, then sand them with sandpaper and, as a final step, prime the walls.
Before gluing, turn off the electricity and remove the covers from switches and sockets. When you stick the strips on, simply leave a cut in their place with a cross, then remove all excess and put the covers in place.
To make the walls look perfect, it is better to remove the baseboards and install them back after you have pasted all the wallpaper - or replace them with new ones.
How to hang paper wallpaper

You will need: a paper knife, a simple pencil, a tape measure, a brush and a container for glue, a roller, a damp sponge (to remove excess glue), a dry cloth.
1. Roll out the roll with the wrong side up and mark the length - the height of the room plus 10 cm. If there is no pattern on the wallpaper, cut several strips at once. If there is a pattern, then the wallpaper needs to be cut so that the details match.
2. First, mark the surface of the walls: starting from the window, mark the width of the strip and draw an even vertical line - for this you can use a plumb line with a cord or a laser level.
3. Dilute the glue exactly as written in the instructions. Apply it evenly to the strip, do not forget about the edges.
Helpful advice. If you have two-layer wallpaper, then fold the sheet inward on both sides and leave for 5 minutes to soak. If the wallpaper is single-layer, then proceed to the next step - the strip will be saturated while you carry it to the wall.
4. Start gluing the wallpaper in the same way as you marked the wall - from the window. If the wallpaper has a pattern, do not forget to ensure that it matches.
5. Using a dry, clean piece of fabric, press the strip from the middle to the edges, from top to bottom. Trim off the excess with the same paper knife.
6. Iron the joints with a roller - this way they will be less noticeable.
After finishing work, leave the windows closed for a day: the wallpaper should dry evenly at the same temperature. For the same reason, you should not use a fan to dry the wallpaper faster - it will only ruin all your efforts.

How to properly glue paper wallpaper - preparing the room

- To glue the next sheet at the joint to the previous one, place the strip as close as possible to the edge of the already pasted strip. Smooth the edges of the strips at the joint especially carefully and remove excess glue from the front side with a dry cloth.
After pasting the wallpaper, wait until it is completely dry before proceeding with any excess trimming. Trim any unnecessary edges using a utility knife.

The second method is as follows: the cut sheet is placed with the pattern down. After this, the back side of the canvas is slightly moistened with water using a soft sponge. When the paper begins to absorb moisture, a thin layer of adhesive solution is applied to it, and then gluing begins.
The method is used mainly by professionals, since it requires certain knowledge and the ability to calculate the amount of water depending on the density of the material. In this case, powdered glue is diluted in less water and applied both to the wall and to the wallpaper.
The third method is the manufacturer's recommendations for gluing paper wallpaper with pre- applied glue. When “Prepasted” is printed on the roll, it means that the adhesive has already been applied and requires water to “activate” it. Before gluing, each cut strip is rolled into a roll and immersed in water for 30 seconds. warm water. Next, the roll is taken out of the water, unrolled and folded with the glue side facing in for a few minutes. After this you need to unstick it and you can glue it to the wall. Any glue that gets on the surface is wiped off with a damp sponge.
Preparation of material
The roll of paper is rolled out face down. Next, mark the height of the wall on it and add 10 cm for a margin. If there is no single pattern on the wallpaper, then there is no need for precise joining of individual sheets, so you can cut several identical sheets at once. Otherwise, the strips are cut with a margin. This is necessary to match the pattern. The manufacturer usually indicates in the instructions how much should be added to the length of the sheets, which increases material consumption.
Gluing technology
Where to start gluing wallpaper? They start work from the window. First, using a level or even strip, a vertical line is drawn from the corner of the slope on the wall, which will later become a guideline for evenly gluing the sheets.
Apply to the previously cut strip glue solution, intended for paper wallpaper. Dry glue is thoroughly mixed in water and allowed to stand until it swells. It is evenly applied to the canvas, starting from the center to the edges, which must be lubricated with special care.
The edges of the canvases are glued end to end. In this case, no folds or kinks should form. During the process, you need to make sure that the glue does not get on the front part of the material. If this happens, you can wipe it off with a dry cloth. The wallpaper remaining near the baseboard and under the ceiling is trimmed with a special wallpaper knife. It is also advisable to remove the baseboards before gluing paper wallpaper. Sockets and switches are removed, the room is de-energized. In their place, cuts are not made in advance, but glued directly onto the holes. They are cut through only after the adhesive solution has dried. After this, you can screw the sockets and switches back.
Internal corner
Do not glue a whole sheet of wallpaper into a corner, as there is a high probability that it may deviate vertically or wrinkles will appear on it. To properly glue wallpaper in this place, measure the distance from the last sheet to the corner and add a margin of 2 cm, that is, the sheets are glued overlapping. Next, using a ruler, a cut is made in the middle of the joint from the ceiling to the baseboard, and the trimmings are removed. The result should be an inconspicuous seam.
Outside corner
Gluing technology outside corner is different. At the same time, it must be perfectly smooth and free of chips and irregularities. The canvas is wrapped around the corner, and its edge is checked with a level, since the location of the next sheets will depend on it. The second method is similar to wallpapering internal corner: they are glued overlapping, after which a cut is made in the middle of the junction of two sheets and the trimmings are removed. The ruler should be metal, since it is more rigid, and it cannot be allowed to move.
Wallpaper on the ceiling
In this case, they are glued perpendicular to the window. The first step is to mark a line, which will later become a guideline for the first stripe.
It can be applied with a string coated with chalk. The canvas is pre-lubricated, applied to the ceiling and aligned along the drawn line. Next, it is pressed and the resulting folds are smoothed out.

How to glue paper on walls
The older generation remembers well how, in times of shortage, paste was used as glue - a viscous mass made from flour and water. Today, the consumer is asked to choose an adhesive for a specific type of wallpaper.
Often we already have old supplies of material or glue at home left over from previous renovations.
But doubts arise whether it is worth using the stored composition.
- Many people wonder whether it is possible to glue paper wallpaper with non-woven glue, or run to the store to buy a specialized analogue? It is possible, moreover, since it is intended for heavy wallpaper, then thin ones will stick to it even more reliably. It just costs more than CMC, that’s the whole difference.
- If you have some PVA lying around, that will do. Just remember to dilute it with water to the consistency of liquid sour cream. But there is one drawback - when you decide next repair, old wallpaper glued to it will be very difficult to dismantle. You will have to soak the coating, then scrape it off with a spatula.
- Ideally, wallpapering walls with paper wallpaper is done using CMC - an inexpensive and effective adhesive that can be diluted with water. But for two-layer duplex, a special composition is produced for heavy wallpaper, with enhanced adhesive properties.
The whole work process
You shouldn’t start working with your bare hands; just rolls and a box of glue are not enough. To make things work, prepare the entire set of available tools.
Prepare your tools
- A container for diluting glue and a bath with low sides for the finished mixture.
- Roller or roller for applying mass to paper.
- Rubber roller or for leveling wallpaper. You can replace them with several pieces of soft, dry cloth.
- Water or laser level.
- Long ruler, pencil, scissors, mounting knife.
- Goats or stepladder.
Preparing the walls
Since this type of finishing does not mask uneven surfaces well, the walls must be leveled as thoroughly as possible.
Strictly following the instructions during preparation will significantly speed up and facilitate the gluing process, and the end result will be perfect.
- Clear the room of furniture, remove baseboards, sockets and switches.
- Old paint, tiles, wallpaper or other finishing must be removed.
- In some cases, plastering is required for rough leveling or filling large cracks and potholes.
- The plaster layer or bare with a deeply penetrating antifungal composition.
- Dried surfaces are puttied with a gypsum-based mixture.
- The frozen layer is finally leveled with sandpaper. Only now the walls are completely ready for wallpapering.

If you have any doubts about whether it is possible to glue non-woven wallpaper onto paper wallpaper, dispel them by actively dismantling the latter.
The old coating left behind will definitely become wet from the glue and come off along with the new finish.
You'll have to buy and glue everything again.
Finishing work
After preparation, you will have to clean the room again.
Wash the floor clean, otherwise the new wallpaper will get dirty on it before installing it on the walls. Now you will have to perform several technical steps to mark and cut the material.
The technology for gluing paper wallpaper is quite simple. However, ignoring even one point can lead to unjustified expectations.
Cutting and fitting
- Unroll part of the roll and place it face up on the floor.
- Measure the fragment according to the height of the wall, draw a line and cut the canvas along it.
- To the side of the finished piece, unroll the roll further. Now you need to adjust the drawing. In this case, a small trim should remain on top.
- If the wallpaper is planned to be glued end-to-end, both edges are cut off; if it is overlapped, one edge is cut off.
- Then the operation is repeated, and subsequent panels are adjusted on the floor to the previous cuts.
- The canvases are numbered and stacked.
- Dilute the glue according to the proportions indicated on the package and leave it to swell overnight.
Pasting
The photo shows the process of gluing the panels.
Installation always starts from the corner closest to the window. If it is professionally leveled and level, glue exactly from it.
But if there is the slightest doubt about evenness, installation begins from a vertical line drawn slightly back.
