Sales Manager is an employee of a company engaged in the sale of goods and services. The profession is suitable for those who are interested in economics and psychology (see choosing a profession based on interest in school subjects).

Features of the profession

A sales manager has other names: sales manager, sales manager, wholesale manager, etc.

Unlike a salesperson in a store, a sales manager most often works with wholesale customers. In other words, he helps his company - a manufacturer or large wholesaler - sell goods to other organizations: retail stores, factories, restaurants, clinics, etc. However, a salesperson who works with expensive goods or goods that require individual packaging and calculations is also called a sales manager. For example, in companies specializing in installation plastic windows, managers work with clients who want to glaze windows in their homes (i.e., retail customers).

Salespeople sell consumer goods, various services, and industrial products. When selling consumer goods, the manager usually deals with stores. They make wholesale purchases of food, clothing, etc., and then sell the goods at retail prices. Industrial products are purchased by enterprises. For example, working at a factory for the production of plastic granules, a salesman is looking for buyers among companies that need such granules for the manufacture of plastic basins, chairs, etc. Managers selling services work in the field of tourism, entertainment, medicine, advertising, personnel selection, etc.

Forms of attracting clients can also be different. As a rule, managers are engaged in active sales, i.e. They themselves look for potential buyers or consumers of services. They call purchasing managers, offer them their company’s goods or services, and send out offers by mail or email. The process is not limited to correspondence and telephone conversations. An interested client, in addition to the price, needs other details: the quality of the product, its properties, availability of certificates, appearance etc. And the manager gives everything necessary information, and if necessary, demonstrates the product. In some companies, the salesperson does not search for clients, but works with those who come through advertising.

No matter how clients are attracted and no matter what the manager sells, for successful work he must know everything about the product or service. It is impossible to sell a batch of air conditioners if you do not know what their power is, what rooms they are designed for, what shortcomings they have and what they are better than air conditioners other companies. To successfully promote a product, a manager has to thoroughly study his profile market: are there any competitors, who is the potential buyer, what requirements does this buyer have for the product.

When the client is ready for a transaction, the manager draws up an agreement that details all the conditions and mutual obligations.

Then carefully monitors the implementation of the contract. If, say, a customer in a nearby town ordered a ton of bricks by March 15th, the sales manager would ensure that the bricks were loaded onto a truck on March 14th and delivered to the designated location at the designated hour.

The manager maintains contact with the client all the time, and in case of any dissatisfaction on his part, corrects the shortcomings. Everything is done to ensure that the client contacts the company again. When communicating with customers, the manager also finds out in detail their attitude towards the product and their new requests. He is interested in new trends, new technologies that appear on the market every now and then and rapidly change it. These processes occur most rapidly in the world of fashion and in the world of electronic technology. But other industries do not allow the specialist to relax - so the sales manager is always on the alert. He not only studies marketing and sales technologies, a real salesman reads industry magazines, attends industry exhibitions and is keenly interested in all new products. And if he notices a drop in demand for some product, he finds out the reasons. The better a manager knows the industry for which he works, the easier it is for him to navigate changes in demand.

For the client, the sales manager is the personification of the company. And if it works well, customers get used to it. It happens that for some reason a manager leaves for another company of the same profile, and his clients follow him. This is professional success, and it is only possible if clients trust the manager, if they do not have to worry about delivery times, order completion, etc.

But for the sales manager himself, precise work can cost a lot of nerves. First, the initial search for clients requires effort and even some courage. The manager's salary depends on the number of deals, but before concluding one deal, you have to receive several refusals, and this is always unpleasant. Working on fulfilling a contract can also be a real test for an impressionable person. How more people participates in the process, the more difficult it is to avoid overlaps. For example, the already mentioned car with a brick may break down on the way. Or they may load the wrong type of brick. Or the vehicle’s carrying capacity is less than the manager expected. Or... In such work there is always a reason for worry. However, a good sales manager is extremely valuable specialist, it is necessary in almost any company - from a pulp mill to a web design company. Because it is not enough to produce a product, you need to buy it. The company's profit, as well as his own income, depends on the sales manager's skills.

Workplace

A sales manager can work in the sales department or in the sales department at an enterprise of absolutely any profile. IN small company The sales department may consist of one manager. In large companies there may be several such specialists. They work under the supervision of the head of the sales department. His position is the next step in the career of an ordinary manager.

Salary

Salary as of 04/02/2019

Russia 40000—300000 ₽

Moscow 45000—250000 ₽

Important qualities

The profession of a sales manager requires organizational skills, erudition, analytical thinking, the ability to learn and retrain, communication skills, the ability to build friendly business relationship, competent speech, self-confidence, responsibility and organization.

Knowledge and skills

The main skill that a sales manager must possess is the ability to sell. He must know well his core market, his competitors and potential clients, and know market trends. Some products and services require knowledge of industry technologies. For example, to trade advertising space, you need to know the technology and laws of the advertising market. To trade in car spare parts - understand cars.

For any business manager in the world, the opportunity to undergo an MBA program means approximately the same thing as for a tennis player dreaming of a professional career, getting a chance to enter the famous “star factory” of Nick Bollettieri, or for a pianist to pass a creative competition and become a student at the Moscow Conservatory .

In business, there can be no mediocrity or random people among top managers. This is an axiom. The system itself will very quickly reject a person who is not sufficiently prepared and does not have the necessary talent. In a word, this is a select club of “stars”, where you can get into thanks to your abilities and luck. A kind of ticket to the elite international business is also a graduation diploma from the famous curriculum MBA (Master of business administration - Master of Business Administration). Currently, this is perhaps the most popular brand in business education.

In essence, an MBA is nothing more than advanced training courses for managers and those specialists who seek to master advanced management technologies. That is this program- add-on to basic education. But the add-on is far from superfluous. After all, domestic graduate School does not keep up with advanced market trends.

Personally, what surprises me in modern educational realities is that today many 25-year-old university graduates, despite their young age, are in dire need of management knowledge. For example, I recently had the opportunity to interview the rector of a prestigious metropolitan university, which trains personnel for the construction industry. According to the academician, many current students, unlike their predecessors who were trained 10–15 years ago, cannot afford to devote several years of their lives only to mastering the sciences, and therefore, already in the third year, they begin to combine study with work. Often, by the end of the fifth year, these guys and girls occupy responsible positions in large companies or even open their own production structures. Naturally, to continue a successful career, certified engineers or economists need the most advanced knowledge in the field of management, which they can quickly obtain through an MBA.

The main thing is practice!

Typically, the curriculum of all such programs consists of a mandatory set of lectures on business theory, as well as business games. The latter are usually allocated up to 2/3 of the total teaching time. As a rule, in such “testing ground” classes, students are engaged in modeling crisis situations or analyzing problem cases related to the activities of companies actually operating in the market. During the “exercises” it is mandatory to consider various options successful strategies.

In interaction with each other and with teachers, students gain management experience that can professionally enrich both a novice manager and an accomplished master.

A very important part of the training of senior managers is practice in large companies. The more serious the school, the more reputable organizations it cooperates with. Therefore, when choosing business courses, you should, among other things, ask where you will do your internship.

As part of the basic theoretical course, students usually study general management, marketing, finance, law, and statistics. At a more advanced level, you can choose a specialization, say, the course “MBA - change management” or “MBA - production management”, etc. In general, due to the abundance of offers on the educational market (both domestic and foreign), there will not be much It’s difficult to find exactly the program and business school that will best suit your needs.

Klondike of useful dating

Many graduates of MBA programs say that their most valuable acquisition was the personal human contacts established during their studies. Indeed, where else can a “green” manager begin to acquire useful connections if not here? After all, in fact, having entered a prestigious business school, the student is boiled in the same cauldron with hundreds of extremely ambitious and energetic individuals just like him. Therefore, it is quite natural that with the ability to install friendly relations you can quickly fill your organizer with names and personal information of people who will definitely be useful to you.

Of course, graduates of the same university can maintain friendly relations for decades. But unlike sentimental student friendships, in business schools the formation of network relationships between fellow students is part of educational process. After all, a manager who is withdrawn into himself, uncommunicative, and who is unable, if necessary, to call whoever he needs to quickly resolve the problem, is absolute nonsense. Therefore, teachers usually recommend that their students not limit themselves to attending lectures together, but spend time in an informal setting: organize picnics, excursions, and collectively celebrate the birthdays of fellow students.

Managerial quality mark

But perhaps the most important advantage of the MBA educational system is its extremely high authority in business circles. In fact, a master's degree in management sciences is a kind of mark of quality. A graduate of an MBA program immediately stands out from the crowd of applicants for a prestigious position and can count on increased favorability when hiring. Many experts even talk about a certain degree of freedom, which, unlike a “mere mortal,” that is, a beginner, is allowed to the lucky owner of the coveted crust.

The thing is that an MBA degree indicates high level manager's competence. However, the diploma itself, without its owner having a certain set of personal qualities, is just a beautiful piece of paper, but we will talk about this serious problem a little later.

Another important advantage of an MBA diploma is its “convertibility”. True, in order for the doors of world-famous companies to open before you, you must have studied at a business school that is among the top ten. But, unfortunately, everything educational institutions from among the top ones are placed in Western Europe and America.

However, if we assume that, according to some reputable consulting firms, the need of Russian business for effective managers amounts to tens of thousands of specialists, then graduates of domestic MBA courses will not be left without work. In addition, many experts note that some of our companies, having been burned by holders of prestigious Western diplomas, are now relying on masters who graduated from Russian business schools, since they are best prepared to work in the specific conditions of the local economy. Suffice it to say that Western teachers who teach students how to do business in a civilized market are unlikely to be able to give Russian students information on how to effectively build gray business schemes and masterfully manage black cash flows.

“I have 100 reasons for this”

Indeed, there can be many reasons to enroll in an MBA program. For example, why would a respectable 40-year-old father of a family, who has a stable job and has achieved a certain official position, sit down again at the same desk with 20-year-old “boys”? In this case, a person is driven by, say, the desire to prove to his superiors, who have stopped promoting him, that he has by no means reached his career ceiling and is capable of continuing to develop professionally.

For some time now, it has been considered good practice among senior executives to obtain a prestigious degree in business in order to speak the same professional language with their subordinates. This is roughly what happened in the 19th century: representatives of the Russian imperial family studied at the elite Academy of the General Staff in St. Petersburg in order to better understand representatives of the military aristocracy.

In general, the bulk of graduates can be divided into two categories. The first includes accomplished professionals. For them, MBA is a great opportunity systematize your accumulated experience and prepare for a new stage in your career.

In the second category we will include those who are trying, with the help of a prestigious education, to overcome the situation of chronic career stagnation, to increase their own market value or even radically change your field of activity and even your place of residence. For many people experiencing a midlife crisis, studying for an MBA is a kind of escape from harsh reality into an imagined dream where all their problems will be happily resolved at once. But, unfortunately, the diploma itself, even the best one, cannot always become the main argument in a conversation with the boss, and headhunters, as a rule, are quite conservative people, and they are suspicious of specialists who suddenly change the direction of their professional activity .

In a special group are young people whose wealthy parents are ready to pay for a fashionable education for their adored children. At the same time, representatives of the “golden youth” themselves often do not have a clear idea of what specific goals they would like to achieve with the help of an MBA. The last of the cases cited here is the saddest, because without adding talent and certain managerial experience to a prestigious diploma, basic knowledge In the chosen professional field and strong motivation, it is impossible to achieve a serious career result. Therefore, before polishing your own qualifications with the help of an MBA, you definitely need to get a basic higher education and work in your specialty for several years to feel that you and management are compatible concepts.

A select caste?

In principle, MBA schools are interested in creating high career expectations among potential applicants. It is enough to visit the websites of some business courses to see this. Typically, during classes, teachers do their best to convince students that upon completion of the program they will automatically move into the elite category of highly paid managers. It is not surprising that many happy MBA degree holders, pumped up with information about their own exceptionality, somewhat overestimate themselves. Most often, the sky-high ambitions of newly minted management experts run into the “narrow-minded” desire of employers to deal, albeit not with such a brilliantly educated specialist, but with a person with extensive practical experience. But sometimes sonorous name a world-famous educational institution literally hypnotizes business owners.

Among Moscow personnel officers there is a legend about one graduate of a super-prestigious Harvard School An MBA who, with his overly energetic managerial actions, managed to destroy a quite strong provincial enterprise in a matter of months. And this is not an isolated example of extremely unsuccessful management of specialists with “top” MBA diplomas. Moreover, incidents happen not only here in Russia, but also abroad. Therefore, in our time, shareholders and business owners are less and less likely to fall under the magical spell of recent business graduates. Of course, one can sympathize with a person who studied for several years in the same United States, invested more than 100 thousand dollars in his preparation and suddenly hears that he is offered to start his career from a lower position, just like the guy who graduated from the same Russian program and spent several times less money.

But, on the other hand, it is unlikely that money invested in serious education can be considered lost. Rather, we are talking about long-term investments in our own future. After all, if the career strategy is chosen correctly, then obtaining an MBA degree is the first step towards your goals. Moreover, according to some expert estimates, today about 20% of companies operating in the domestic market want to see people in various leadership positions who certainly have an MBA level qualification. Over time, the number of such employers will undoubtedly only increase. This means that one day the time will come when a person who has not passed special training, they simply will not be allowed to take on a serious position.

Representatives of what profession can be found today in any company, regardless of its area of activity, form of ownership and size? Without which specialist is it impossible for both a small company and a huge corporation to operate? Of course, without the person who manages the company’s activities, that is, without a manager. After all, without proper organization of the work of a group of people striving to achieve a certain goal, it is impossible to achieve any noticeable results.

It's easy to guess that manager's profession V modern world is not only one of the most in demand, but also incredibly popular among ambitious young people who think that a manager is easy job, which does not require special labor costs. And at the same time, they absolutely do not take into account the fact that the specialty of a manager, like any other leadership position, is a complex and responsible job that has its own characteristics, which we will try to introduce you to today.

Who is a manager?

A highly qualified specialist who belongs to the top and middle management of the enterprise and carries out general management at a specific production site. The main defining feature of any manager is the presence of subordinates.

The name of the profession comes from the English manage (lead, manage). In other words, a manager can be called any boss who organizes work at an enterprise or company. The first managers appeared in the 19th century, when a large number of large enterprises arose, the owners of which could no longer cope with their management on their own. It was then that hired managers were needed, who used in their work four actions at once, which became the basis of management: planning, organization, motivation and control.

IN modern society It is customary to distinguish managers depending on the number and size of management objects:

  • lower-level managers - junior managers, which include heads of departments, foremen, heads of departments, etc.;
  • middle managers - managers junior managers, which include the director of the branch, the head of the workshop, the dean of the faculty, etc.;
  • senior managers - CEO enterprises, store director, university rector, etc.

In addition, managers are distinguished by area of activity: sales manager, HR manager, advertising manager, financial manager, content manager, office manager, tourism manager, etc.

A manager's professional responsibilities largely depend on his area of work. For example, a sales manager is responsible for increasing profits from product sales, an office manager specializes in organizing the management activities of senior management, and a tourism manager does everything possible to attract as many larger number tourists to your agency.

However, in any case, officials manager's responsibilities imply the implementation of management actions, which include: planning and organizing the activities of the enterprise within the production area subordinate to it, maintaining reporting documentation, solving personnel, organizational, technical, economic and socio-psychological problems in the team, monitoring the quality of work of subordinates, participating in development of advertising strategy and innovation and investment activities of the enterprise, etc.

What personal qualities should a manager have?

Because manager's job basically consists in managing the production activities of the enterprise employees subordinate to him, such a specialist must necessarily have high organizational skills, leadership qualities and a well-developed sense of justice. In addition, a good manager should be:

  • decisive;
  • proactive;
  • self-critical;
  • sociable;
  • responsible;
  • active;
  • patient;
  • stress-resistant;
  • ambitious.

In addition to personal qualities, a manager must have a certain set of knowledge and skills, without which he will not be able to effectively perform his duties. In particular, a representative of this profession must be well-versed in the field of economics, social psychology, law, management, patterns of pricing, marketing, taxation, techniques of commercial negotiations, organization of production, conflict management and advertising.

Advantages of being a manager

Main advantage of being a manager, of course, is its prestige and great opportunities for self-realization. Therefore, today even preschoolers dream of being not pilots or long-distance sailors, but bosses at some large enterprise, or even better, a director in their own company.

Other advantages of this profession include:

  • demand - managers are needed in almost all spheres of human life;
  • business trips, including foreign ones, are a great opportunity to see the world;
  • various acquaintances - communication with the most different people allows you to significantly expand your horizons;
  • high salary level - the average salary of managers in Russia is approximately 40-45 thousand rubles.

Disadvantages of the manager profession

Despite all the attractiveness and opening prospects of this profession, management work is fraught with a huge number of shortcomings, due to which not every specialist can achieve professional success. And speaking of disadvantages of the manager profession First of all, it is necessary to note the great responsibility. After all, the manager is responsible not only for the work performed with his own hands, but also for the work of his subordinates.

It is also impossible not to say that the common belief that the manager only distributes responsibilities among employees and spends his time in idleness is not true. In fact, the work of a manager is very difficult and nervous, requiring complete dedication and enormous capacity for work: sometimes you have to work after hours, without the opportunity to be distracted and relax.

And all this under stressful conditions, when important decisions have to be made in emergency situations. At the same time, you must constantly remember that even one thing is wrong decision can have a very negative impact on your career. Agree, not everyone is able to withstand such a crazy pace of work and the “burden” of responsibility.

Where can you get a manager profession?

Get a manager's profession Today it’s quite simple: almost every economics university has a management department. In addition, you can master this profession through specialized courses. True, in this case, you will be able to successfully find a job only if you already have a higher education behind you.

Also, to become a manager, you can overcome a more difficult path. Quite often, large companies independently train managers from among the most promising employees. Therefore, you can first get a job in a company, try to prove yourself at your best the best side, and then learn your favorite profession at the expense of the enterprise.

Note that based on current situation In the labor market in this area, we can say with confidence that graduates of such types are in greatest demand among employers. best economic universities in Russia, How:

  • Moscow State University them. M.V. Lomonosov (MSU)
  • Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI)
  • State University of Management (SUM)
  • All-Russian State Tax Academy (VGNA)
  • Russian Economic Academy named after. G.V. Plekhanov (REA)

More and more schoolchildren are interested in what subjects need to be taken to become a manager. The thing is that “management” is a very common specialty now. After graduation, you can become a manager in one field or another. But what do you need to know about admission? What subjects will you need to pass to become a manager? Where can I go for further education? It's not that difficult to figure all this out. Of course, you should first choose which one you can enroll in, then check the exams for admission to a manager there. But in general outline The admission process will be the same in all universities.

Management is...

What subjects do I need to take to become a manager? Before finding out the answer to this question, you must first understand what profession we are talking about. After all, schoolchildren try to choose either promising areas of study, or those where it is easy to study. Management, as already mentioned, is a very common area of study.

But who will the citizen be after graduation? Does it even make sense to acquire this profession? A manager is a manager. Most often it is about sales. And any - both in the IT field and in regular stores.

In Russia it is considered both promising and useless. High competition is what you will have to face. And even a person without a diploma can work as a salesperson in a store. Not everyone will be able to achieve heights. That is why the profession of a manager is not very respected by parents and is preferred by applicants. This is a humanitarian direction, it is easier to study than, for example, to become a programmer. And if you just want to get at least some kind of diploma, you can think about what subjects you need to take to become a manager.

List of items

Management is a common liberal arts field of study. And almost every student knows what exams he will have to take after 11th grade to be admitted. It is worth noting that there are no additional tests or competitions when considering applicants as future students. Therefore, it will be enough to successfully pass the Unified State Exam. And submit documents to one or another institution for study.

But what subjects need to be taken as a manager? At the moment it is:

  • Russian language;
  • mathematics;
  • social science.

The last exam is a profile one. Actually the main one. It is on this basis that applicants will be assessed first. Taking into account the fact that now in Russia they plan to divide all exams into ordinary and specialized ones, it is simply necessary to know that social studies plays a paramount role for a manager.

where to go

You will no longer have to take any additional tests, tests or difficult subjects. Where to apply to become a manager? This is a rather difficult question. After all, there are a lot of training options.

Among them are:

  1. Admission to the University. After 11th grade, having passed the Russian language, mathematics and social studies, you can enroll in the “Management” program at almost any university in the country. This direction is available at both Moscow State University and MGIMO. You can also pay attention to any liberal arts universities.
