Every year, the installation of bar counters in an apartment or house is becoming more and more popular. This is due not only to considerations of originality, but also to the practicality of this solution; it is very convenient to have conversations and spend evenings with friends at the counter. Wooden bar stools are rarely seen; metal products are more common, which is why if you choose this option, you can stand out and make the interior original.

What you need to prepare before starting work

If you are determined to make a wooden bar stool with your own hands, then you will need a certain set of materials and tools; the list may vary, but the main components are usually the same:

Bars for legs For manufacturing, it is best to choose hard wood, yes, they are more difficult to process, and the price of this option is higher, but the product will be reliable. In addition, the structure of hardwoods: oak, maple, beech, etc. - much more beautiful and distinct, which is also of no small importance.
Seat material This can be a board made of the same material as the legs, and if the seat will be upholstered, then you can choose another option, for example, cheap pine, the main thing is that its thickness is sufficient to ensure reliability (we recommend options 40-50 mm and more).

Again, if there is upholstery, do not forget about the covering material and foam rubber to create a soft surface.

Tool You will need a tape measure for measurements, a carpenter's pencil for making marks, a drill with a set of metal drills, and a hacksaw or power tool for cutting wood. In addition, you will need sandpaper to process the surface, as well as fasteners for the legs.
paints and varnishes To avoid other adverse effects, you will need impregnation or paint; most often the first option is chosen, since it does not cover the structure of the wood, but only gives the surface a certain shade.

Important! If you want to make a chair with a back, then stock up on material for this part of the structure; we recommend making such options with upholstery so that the product looks better and is convenient to use.

Workflow Description

All work can be divided into two stages - preparing the elements and assembling the structure, each of them is important in its own way, so follow all the recommendations as carefully and scrupulously as possible.

Preparation

Instructions for this stage are as follows:

  • It is important to choose optimal height design, this indicator must be determined in advance. Typically, the length of the legs is from 75 to 90 centimeters, depending on the height of the bar counter, so you must know at what level the tabletop will be attached.
  • The size of the seat should be such that any adult can sit comfortably on it; experts recommend making the size at least 60 cm 2; if it is smaller, then large people may find it uncomfortable. You should also decide on the shape of the seat, there are two main options - round and square, the first solution is more difficult to implement, since you will have to work with a jigsaw.
  • To make it easier for you, we will look at classic versionwooden chairs for bar counter without backrest with square seat. First, cut out the seat, finished item must be sanded thoroughly with sandpaper, Special attention We recommend paying attention to the ends.

  • Next, the legs are cut to the required length, which are also sanded; if desired, they can be beveled internal corners legs, but for this it is better to use a grinder with an emery disc. It is also necessary to prepare cross members that will be attached at the bottom and under the seat itself and will serve to increase rigidity.

Advice! To make it easier to carry stools in the future, you can make an oblong slot 3-4 centimeters wide and 8-10 centimeters long in the middle of the seat. To do this, draw a future cutout, drill a hole through which to place hacksaw blade and cutting is done along the line.

Assembly

The process goes like this:

  • First, the upper crossbars are attached along the upper edge of the legs; for this, a hole is drilled in them and the legs for a dowel, which is lubricated with glue and inserted tightly. It is important to achieve the tightest possible joints.
  • The easiest way to fasten the lower crossbars is with self-tapping screws, and so that they do not interfere with each other, it is better to place the planks with a slight offset. It is better to choose self-tapping screws coated to match the color of the future impregnation.
  • The finished and assembled legs are attached to the seat using corners, which are sold in furniture and construction hardware stores; the process is simple and will not cause difficulties.

Such homemade high chairs-stools are convenient not only at the bar, but also for a child sitting at a common table.

To make the chairs look neat and attractive, during manufacturing you need to very carefully mark out the parts, carefully process them, and then assemble them correctly. The dimensions of the stool (Fig. 1) correspond to standard height bar counters. For convenience, it is equipped with legs that serve as footrests, as well as a low back, which provides support for the lower back, allowing you to sit without straining your back muscles. The legs and drawers are fastened with a simple tongue-and-groove joint.

The prongs - 15 mm rods - are simply inserted with glue into holes drilled to a depth of 10 mm of the same diameter. The grooves for the drawers are 10 mm deep. The counter tenons on the side frames with a cross section of 20 x 44 mm can be adjusted very precisely.

The seat is cut out of furniture board 25 mm thick and attached to the drawers with 4 dowels, which provides the stool with the necessary strength. The curved crossbars of the backrest are cut from a blank measuring 44 x 380 mm (Fig. 2).

Do-it-yourself bar stools - work progress in the photo

1. The front edge of the seat, measuring 340 x 340 mm, is cut along an arc whose height is 20 mm. After cutting, the edges are cleaned with sandpaper.

2. On the back side of the seat, select square sockets with sides of 20 mm.

3.Thorns on the sides can be made with a regular hacksaw by securing the workpiece in a miter box.

4. In each side drawer, at a distance of 60 mm from the shoulder of the tenon, two 8 mm blind holes are drilled for the seat mounting dowels.

5. To avoid mistakes when cutting out the backrest crossbar, it is better to make grooves for the rear legs after the stool is assembled.

6.In the rear legs, the upper parts, 20 mm wide and 250 mm long, are removed to install the backrest crossbars.

7. In the legs, select grooves for the tsar tenons. The position of these grooves determines the accuracy of installing the seat in its place without distortion.

8.The seat is polished. The best way to do this is with tape. grinder with fine-grained sandpaper.

9.Assembling the stool begins with the front legs, connecting them with drawers and legs. The parts are tightened with clamps.

10. Final assembly is carried out using tie-down belts and clamps. In order not to spoil the surface of the stool parts, pieces of cardboard or thin fiberboard are placed under the clamps and at the corners of the legs where the tension tape passes. After checking and adjusting the geometry of the stool, you can mark and file the backrest bars.

11. To mark the counter holes for the dowels on the underside of the seat, screws with large heads are lowered into the holes in the drawers (point up). After this, apply the seat, adjust its position and hit it from above with a mallet. The caps will leave a very noticeable mark on the bottom surface of the seat. All that remains is to drill these holes and insert the dowels with glue.

The stool parts are made from pine wood. It is rational to use blanks with a cross section of 20 x 44 mm. However, boards of other sizes can be used. Stools can be varnished or glazed to match the color of your interior.

  1. Where to begin?
  2. How to make a concave seat

Making any piece of furniture with your own hands is quite simple, you just need to have a tool, material and a properly designed idea. If previously the bar counter was a typical piece of restaurant furniture, now it is part of the kitchen or open living room of private houses and cottages. Today it is a fashionable element home interior, a mandatory addition to which are bar stools. Making them yourself will not be difficult if you pay attention to the master class presented below.

Where to begin?

To begin with, you should define what a bar stool is. In simple words is a stool with high legs that can be equipped with a small backrest. The simplest way to make a bar stool from wood, while some elements can be replaced with laminated chipboard panels.

For making any wooden structure Drawings with precise indication of all dimensions of the product are required. They will allow you to avoid mistakes during work and determine the amount of necessary consumables.

Where to start and how to make a bar stool with your own hands? To do this, decide on the height of the bar counter. The following calculations must be made:

  1. We measure the distance from the edge of the bar counter to the floor;
  2. It is necessary to subtract 350 mm from the obtained dimensions. We get the required height of the bar stool.

For wooden options or bar stools from combined materials the height of the seat will be at the same level, so you can make a stool from any material and in any design, without making mistakes in size.

What tools are needed for the job?

In order to make bar stools with your own hands, you need the following tools:

  • roulette;
  • hammer;
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • screwdriver;
  • sanding machine or sandpaper;
  • jigsaw;
  • brush.

Features of making a chair from solid wood

If you want to make a durable and beautiful stool that is ideal for your bar counter, then you should choose solid wood as the material for it. The most accessible and most suitable species for this are birch and pine. You can purchase them in the form furniture panels and boards in any specialized store. The thickness of the material should be 20-30 mm. The master class involves making a stool in several stages. First of all, you need to cut out 10 parts, taking into account the dimensions included in the drawings:

  • the first piece is a circle for sitting, which should be 30 mm thick and 350 mm in diameter;
  • the second part is a circle that serves as a backing for the seat. Its diameter is 250 mm with a thickness of 20 mm;
  • then four legs are cut out from solid wood 30 mm thick;
  • Lastly, we cut out 4 strips, which play the role of stiffeners in the structure. For their manufacture, you should also use material 30 mm thick.

The legs should be cut in such a way that the wood structure in them is vertical. Otherwise, the strength of the structure will be significantly reduced and it will be unreliable.

When all the wooden parts have been cut, you can begin assembling the structure. For this you need the following consumables:

  • metal corners through which the stiffeners will be attached to the legs;
  • self-tapping screws, 5x80 mm in size, for fastening the legs together and screwing them to a small circle;
  • self-tapping screws, size 5x20, in order to secure the stiffeners;
  • self-tapping screws, 5x40 in size, with which the seat will be attached to the small circle.

The chair is assembled according to the following scheme:

  1. We fasten the legs together using self-tapping screws.
  2. We install stiffening ribs that are fixed with corners.
  3. Screw the small circle to the legs.
  4. A large circle of seating is installed on top, which is fastened to the pre-assembled structure
  5. The finished chair is varnished.

The second option for making a bar stool

Drawing of this product somewhat different from the previous one. The design is a classic high stool, equipped with several stiffening ribs. Despite their simplicity, such products look very good on a home bar; they are durable and comfortable.

The rectangular seat of such chairs can, if desired, be upholstered with fabric or made concave, which will be excellent design solution for a home bar.

As in the previous version, this wooden bar stool project begins with the creation of a drawing.

To simplify the illustration, it does not show the two crossbars located under the seat. In this design they must be present.

Now let's look at how to make such a wooden chair:

  1. For the legs, four beams are taken, measuring 40x40 mm. It would be best to take pine, birch or poplar. Each leg must be 710 mm long.

  1. We fasten the 2 legs, installing the top crossbar. The same should be done with the other two legs.
  2. We install the middle and bottom crossbars in the same way.

  1. Now we assemble the general structure from the legs. To do this, attach the two remaining upper crossbars and install the two lower ones, which will serve as footrests.

Not every apartment has spacious kitchens. But if you are lucky enough to live in big apartment, and the kitchen is of considerable size, then it can be divided by a bar counter. But not everyone likes the range on offer. Yes, and they are expensive. If you are a fan of unique and extraordinary things, do not be lazy and make such a chair yourself.

Many owners of apartments and private houses equip their kitchen or living room with a bar counter - a very convenient and functional piece of furniture.

Many craftsmen make the interior items they need, including chairs, with their own hands, while enjoying it. Try it too. You can make the drawings yourself or find them on the Internet. You can become a master of your craft in this specific area. And your interest will turn from a hobby into a profitable business. In addition, by making furniture with your own hands, you will please your relatives, friends, and acquaintances by making something original for them. Your house or apartment will have a unique interior, and among other things, you will significantly save your family budget.

So, let's try to make a bar stool with our own hands.

A worthy addition would be original and at the same time comfortable bar stools.

Deciding on the design and construction of a bar stool

First you need to think about what height the chairs will be. This directly depends on the size of the bar counter. Take into account all the nuances - you should be comfortable sitting on the chairs. It has great importance and design. The furniture should be combined with the design of the kitchen and match other interior items.

The simplest version of a bar stool is made of wood and plywood.

When choosing a design, many factors are important:

  • number of legs, the most reliable is four;
  • height regulator;
  • it is convenient if the chair has a footrest, back and armrests (these parts of the chair must be present if the bar counter serves as a dining table);
  • upholstery and the material from which they will be made. (it depends on this whether the chair will be good or not).

Depending on the option chosen, you need to take solid wood or plywood.

Necessary materials

They use the most different materials– metal, wood, plastic. The best wood for a bar stool is varieties such as oak, beech or maple. You can purchase everything you need at any hardware store. You can order materials from the workshop. We will need: a panel array (tsars) 25-30 mm, the approximate diameter of the array for the seat is 360 mm; timber 50x50 mm (legs); wood glue, foam rubber, upholstery fabric. A sealant or paint may be needed to coat the piece and protect it from moisture.

You can use metal, but in this case the work will be more difficult.

Required Tools

Before you begin, you need to stock up on the following tools:

  • pencil for marking,
  • roulette,
  • square,
  • hacksaw,
  • sandpaper,
  • fasteners for legs,
  • drill,
  • drills 3 and 6 mm,
  • glue,
  • self-tapping screws (5x20, 5x30, 5x80),
  • bit,
  • hammer,
  • screwdriver

Standard dimensions of bar stools are calculated based on the distance from the bottom surface of the tabletop to the floor.

Manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions

To set the height of a bar stool, you need to measure the length from the top of the bar counter to the floor. The distance from the seat to the counter should be 30-35 cm.

The gap between the chair seat and the tabletop is usually 30–35 cm.

Before work, prepare drawings with exact dimensions. This will help you know the amount of material. At the initial stage, we collect all the necessary parts. We make markings for the blanks. Using a jigsaw, we cut out a circle from solid wood; the diameter should be 360 mm - this is the upper part of the seat. Now it needs to be sanded with a machine. Then we cut out a smaller circle – 260 mm. You will need it to assemble and attach the legs.

Based on basic data, you can create your own product design

The seat can be made square - at your discretion. To do this, take a wide drawer or two or three planks 120 mm wide. To connect them, we machine a tenon and groove in the end side. We glue the parts with wood glue or PVA for furniture, connect them, then fix them and leave them until completely dry.

When choosing wood for a product, pay attention to the most accessible species - pine and birch.

Let's start making the legs; we make them from 50x50 mm timber. Be sure to keep the structure upright. We plan the entire length with a planer so that the section at the bottom of the legs is 2.5x2.5 cm, and the place of attachment to the seat is much thicker.

The required thickness is 20 and 30 mm.

You will also need four so-called prongs. This will help significantly fix the structure and provide support for the legs. The 2.5x2.5 beam is planed, and a tenon is filed in the end part. We make a nest in the legs for a thorn. We distribute it at a height of approximately 30 cm from the floor. Lubricate the legs with glue, insert them into the sockets and secure them firmly. Let it dry.

Some details can be borrowed from old chairs.

Now let's assemble the bar stool. It is important to avoid gaps and cracks. Then, once the parts have been adjusted, we connect them. The pointed corners of the studs must be rounded.

  1. In the circle for attaching the legs, you need to drill 2 holes of 6-8 mm in diameter for each leg for dowels. They must be strung on them with effort. In addition to the legs, metal corners are attached with screws.
  2. A circle of larger diameter is attached to the top of the screws on the reverse side. Now we place the chair on a straight plane and adjust the legs.
  3. We thoroughly process the chair with a sanding machine, cover it with varnish or stain, preferably in several layers.

When cutting out the legs of the future chair, make sure that the structure of the wood in the solid wood is vertical.

In some cases, you can install backrests and armrests. If desired, the seat can be made soft. Before covering the bar stools, add foam rubber, batting, or a children's mattress made from coconut coir. Upholstery fabric must be good good quality. Faux leather will also work.

Cut out stiffening ribs 20 mm thick - they will serve as a footrest.

On the back side of the seat we apply a layer of glue - furniture PVA or BF-88. We lubricate the filler, for example foam rubber, and the upholstery material with glue.

The ribs are attached to the legs using corners that are placed below, on the floor side.

We press the foam firmly against the seat and cover it with upholstery. We fasten with a stapler first in the corners, then along the perimeter.

The diameter of the holes for self-tapping screws in the plane should be 6 mm, at the end - 3 mm.

The final stage is decoration

The bar stools are ready. Now let's start decorating. This is an interesting and exciting process. Having mastered this art, you can give a unique look not only to newly made furniture, but also to furniture that requires updating. There are several methods of decoration. Let's take a look at some of them.

These bar stools are very simple to make and easy to use.

Decoration with fabric. First you need to choose the type and color of fabric. It must be durable. It is necessary to take into account general interior kitchens. Take, for example, a tapestry. The structure is 100 percent cotton and artificial fibers. It is quite strong and wear-resistant. Jacquard, microfiber, and furniture silk are also used - it is better suited for rare furniture.

The peculiarity is that the seat can be made straight or bent, and subsequently, if desired, upholstered with fabric.

If you don't want to bother with reupholstering, just sew the covers. This will update your interior.

For the chair legs, use beams measuring 38 x 38 mm.

Recently, designers prefer decoupage as the most advantageous technique in decoration. Everything is elementary. The surface is treated with sandpaper, covered with putty, and painted. It is better to work with white paint on water based. Against this background, decoupage is as delightful as ever. Then decorations from special napkins are glued on. Or use floral and vintage pictures. The final stage is final painting and acrylic varnish coating.

You can take poplar wood if there is no pine or birch.

The length of the legs will be 71 cm.

There are also simple methods, widely used at home. The most common is painting. It is better to use spray paint. A variety of colors will give the product an attractive look.

To make it comfortable, set the height of the footrest according to the height of the people.

Decorating with a jute rope, wrapping it around a bar stool will create a special warmth and coziness in the house. .

To set the height of a bar stool, you need to measure the length from the top of the bar counter to the floor

Using these and other methods, you will create an exclusive home furniture, which will fully meet your desires, where you will feel cozy and comfortable. Having created such an atmosphere, you will be happy to return home after a busy day at work.

The seat can be made square - at your discretion.

It is important to avoid gaps and cracks.

These plugs do not need to be fastened with screws or fixed with glue - they adhere perfectly to friction. The main thing is to sand them to the size of the legs.

Chair primer

After the primer has dried, paint everything below the seat with black paint. Wait for it to dry.

Painting chair legs

Wrap surfaces painted black with film so as not to stain them during further work. Paint the seat red.

How to avoid mistakes

Of course, there is a possibility of making mistakes. Many of them can be easily fixed, but some can ruin all your efforts. To prevent this, always follow the proverb “Measure twice, cut once.”

Use diagrams and drawings of finished products that indicate exact calculations for every detail. This way you will protect yourself from unnecessary costs for materials and inaccuracies during assembly.

If you are new to carpentry, do not try to start work by assembling a designer chair with complex design and it’s better to discard the idea of assembling a folding bar stool. Grab the most simple model, practice, get better at it, and then gradually increase your level. If you still decide to create your own exclusive model, use special computer programs for design development and structural calculations. Among the most common, convenient and easy to use, two can be distinguished:

  • PRO-100;
  • Cutting.

Thanks to them, you will much faster build an accurate drawing of the product, verified down to the millimeter, and preview the result in a 3D model. Additional functions these user programs allow you to find out the number necessary materials, which significantly reduces waste.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in making bar stools with your own hands; this task can be easily completed. If you have any questions about this topic, please ask them in the comments. Good luck and easy work!
