Quick navigation through the article

Even a novice needlewoman can sew curtains for a nursery with her own hands. After all, there is no need for complex cutting and decor; the main thing is to choose a nice fabric, curtain tape and a sewing machine. In this material you will find step-by-step master class on tailoring simple curtains with photos and videos, as well as 30 photos of curtains in the interiors of boys’ and girls’ rooms of different ages.

A little about choosing fabric

Not just any fabric is suitable for sewing curtains in a child’s room, but only one that is easy to wash and iron and is resistant to wear and fading.

  • The ideal choice is a mixed fabric consisting of natural cotton/linen and synthetics. Such material will be beautiful, practical, resistant to fading and shrinkage, will wrinkle less and be easier to iron.

As for density, it is better to choose dense and medium-density fabrics for a children's room.

  • To make it comfortable for your child to sleep during the day, you can sew curtains for the nursery from light-proof blackout fabric. However, you can sew two-layer curtains with a light-proof lining or supplement regular curtains with a ready-made blackout lining.

When choosing the color and design of children's curtains, you can focus on the shade/pattern of wallpaper, walls or other textiles in the room. For example, this could be bedding, pillows, carpet or upholstery. Curtain design ideas for a girl's room can be seen in the following selection of photos.

Here are some curtain design ideas for a boy's room.

Master class on sewing curtains

You can sew curtains for a children's room in the most in different ways. In our instructions, we offer a basic and easy-to-follow technology, once mastered, you will be able to sew curtains as in the photo below - with a uniform (pencil) fold...

...or shaped like “buffe”, “triple”, “glass”, etc., as in the following selection of photos.

  • The style of curtain folds depends on what type of curtain tape they have.

Necessary materials for sewing curtains:

  1. Textile;
  2. Curtain tape of the desired width, style and gathering factor;
  • The width and gather factor of the braid you need to choose depends on the type of fabric and your wishes. If the fabric is dense, then it is better to choose a ribbon with a width of 6 cm or more; if it is light, then a 4-cm ribbon will be enough. The choice of coefficient depends on how thick the curtain folds you want to achieve. The higher the coefficient, the tighter the assembly will be. For a children's room, it is better to sew curtains with a light (ratio 1:1.5) or medium (ratio 1:2) fold, then they will be easier to wash and iron. If you want to purchase shaped curtain tape (“glass”, “buff”, “butterfly”, etc.), then keep in mind that they have a gathering factor of 2 to 3, which means they require a larger amount of fabric and more difficult work.
  1. Sewing machine;
  2. 2 skeins of thread - matching the fabric and white;
  3. Other sewing accessories (scissors, needle suitable thickness, pins, ruler, etc.);
  4. Iron.

Step 1. Calculation of material consumption

So, our goal is to sew curtains from two canvases and sew curtain tape to each. How long should you buy the ribbon and what size fabric? First measure the length of the curtain rod, and then determine the length of the finished curtains.

  • Keep in mind that short curtains can be 20-25 cm below the window sill, while long ones can touch the floor or barely reach it (about 1-2 cm).

Having received all this data, we make calculations required length and the width of the fabric, as well as the length of the tape according to the following formulas:

  • The width of the fabric cut and the length of the curtain tape for one canvas= (Cornice length/2) x 2(This is the average gathering factor, but if you want a thicker gathering, then choose a factor of 3, and if less, then 1.5)) + (3 cm x 2 ( on the folds on the sides)) + 15-20 cm ( ).
  • Fabric cut length for one canvas= Desired length of the finished product + 10 cm (on the bottom hem) + Curtain tape width + 15-20 cm (for shrinkage after washing and possible errors).

It turns out that if the cornice is 2 m long, then to sew children's curtains with a medium gather we must buy 442 cm of fabric and ribbon (the width of each canvas is 206 cm + 15 cm of shrinkage).

  • By the way, it is better to buy curtain tape with a small margin.
  • If you are sewing curtains made of synthetic or mixed material with a large proportion synthetic fibers, then the increase in shrinkage can be ignored.
  • If the fabric has a design or pattern that is repeated along its entire length (rapport), then its consumption for each canvas increases by the width of the repeat. That is, if the size of the repeat is 30 cm, then you need to buy 30-35 cm more material than the amount obtained from the formula (to adjust the print).
  • When buying fabric in a store, you only need to tell the seller the width of the cut you need, since the fabrics are sold in standard lengths of 2.5 or 3 m. You will need to calculate the length of your future curtains for cutting yourself at the next stage of the master class.

Step 2. Preparing and cutting fabric

Now that we have bought the fabric and calculated the required dimensions, we can start cutting.

  • It is better to wash and iron the material first in order to sew curtains taking into account the shrinkage of the fabric.

To avoid making mistakes in cutting, first draw a simple pattern-sketch on a piece of paper.

Step 3. Processing the side sections of the canvas

So, the material is cut and ironed, and the machine is ready for use. Next, we need to process the side sections of both canvases with a double hem. To do this you need to do the following:

  • Fold the edge by 1.5 cm - Iron - Fold the edge again by 1.5 cm - Iron - Sew the hem at a distance of 1 mm from its edge (if desired, you can pre-baste the edges).

Before you start sewing, do not forget to test the machine settings on an extra piece of fabric and, if necessary, change the stitch size, replace the needle or thread, adjust the thread tension and presser foot pressure.

Step 4. Processing the bottom cut of the canvas

The next step is processing the cut along the bottom of the canvas. To do this, we repeat the same steps as for the side cuts, but make hems 5 cm wide.

Step 5. Sew on the curtain tape

The last and, perhaps, the most important and difficult stage is sewing on the braid. You can sew it on in different ways; in our master class we will talk about the simplest, in our opinion.

  1. We place the canvas, the bottom and side sections of which we have already processed, face up, and the backside on the table.
  2. We bend the side edge of the braid 1 cm inward, and then place it on the canvas with the front side facing us (!) and so that:
  • It lay “upside down,” meaning the loops were closer to you and not to the top edge of the curtain.
  • The top edges of both the braid and the curtains matched and lay at the same level.

We align the tape in the correct position and fix it with pins in the middle to the end of the canvas, not forgetting to also bend its edge on the other side of the canvas by 1 cm. Then we pull out the threads from the folded edges of the braid.

  1. We sew the tape with an indentation of 1 mm from its bottom edge and break off the pins.
  2. We bend the edge of the curtain with the sewn braid to the wrong side and secure it again with pins. Make sure that the white edge of the tape does not peek out from the front of the curtain.
  3. We change the white bottom (shuttle) thread to a thread that matches the fabric and begin to attach the ribbon, including its sides.

  • To avoid accidentally stitching the threads of the braid, it is better to hold them.
  • If the braid is wide (more than 6 cm), then add a line in the middle of the braid, of course, without going into the loops.
  1. Well, that's all, all that remains is to tie the ends of the braid threads into a knot (on both sides of the fabric), then pull them, form folds and hang ready-made curtains on the hooks of the curtain rod.

Curtains should not be excessively long

Caring for curtains in a children's room

Curtains in a children's room should be arranged so that they can be instantly removed or changed. Care consists of ventilation, cleaning, periodic washing, following the advice on caring for materials.

For each child, his room is like a separate world in which he feels safe and alone. More precisely, not like that - you have to make this world like that. And it’s not only about the attitude towards the child and every possible support for his interests regarding the room, but also about the design of that very nursery. Every detail is important - from the color of wallpaper and curtains to chairs.

Features of the interior of a children's room

The interior of a children's room should combine practicality and originality. The first is for the parents, the second is for the child.

Most often, bright colors are chosen for the nursery - wallpaper, curtains, furniture. This is a common mistake, and here’s why: renovations in a children’s room are not done for a year or even two, and over time a teenager may become tired of the bright furnishings. Choose those shades and colors that the child may like in the future - and give up brightness in everything. It is better to pay attention to the basic calm tones and complement the design bright accents.

Of course, over time you will still have to change the interior of the children's room. The so-called evolution can occur - from a cute children's room to an almost adult teenage refuge. These metamorphoses are the main difference between the interior of a nursery and the design of any other room. The children's bedroom seems to change along with its occupant. Children's curtains are gradually being replaced by calmer ones or photo curtains with images of favorite groups or idols. As the child grows up, he introduces the features of his personality into the room. You need to be prepared for the fact that a teenager will at some point want to repaint the walls or buy new curtains.

What to look for when choosing

How to choose curtains for a children's bedroom? First of all, when decorating a nursery and choosing curtains, you should pay attention to the gender of the child. Based on his preferences, his personality and favorite colors. For children of different sexes, if they live in the same room, it is very important to divide the room into two zones - a boy's and a girl's. A very interesting idea would be to hang and different curtains- in this way you can emphasize both his individuality and hers, and not offend anyone.

Modern children develop very quickly, so do not forget about their opinion - after all, they should sleep in their own room, not their parents. Listen to your children and remember that the adult's goal is to create a comfortable, safe and practical place for the child. In the style he wants. If he wants pictures in a fantasy style, then so be it; if he wants plain curtains, so be it. This is also very important psychological aspect– the child will know that he is trusted.

The only thing parents should really worry about is safety. For example, it is better to choose reliable curtain rods so that the child does not accidentally twist something while playing and get hurt. It should be attached to the wall as firmly as possible.

Choosing a form

Beautiful curtains can be an excellent feature of a nursery’s interior - if when decorating it it seems that something is missing, choose other curtains. In addition to fabric and color, the shape of the curtain is of great importance. Their wear resistance will largely depend on it.

Curtains with tulle are a classic option, including for children's rooms. Tulle can act as an accent or background. You can choose a brighter color as an accent, and a calmer one as a background. Fluffy tulle curtains will look very beautiful in a girl’s room, and straight sea-colored curtains in a boy’s room.

Combined curtains are a great option for a children's bedroom. These can be curtains from two different materials(different in texture, of course), two-color curtains - contrasting or similar shades. There are two design options related to combined curtains: contrasting or harmonious. In the first case, two opposite shades are taken, in the second, two adjacent colors. For a children's room, it is better to go with the second option and complement it with several bright accents - after all, harsh colors are not quite suitable option for the child's psyche.

Corner curtains must completely follow the curve of the window. When choosing them, you should understand what you want to achieve - hide the window or make it more noticeable. Corner curtains can be an excellent interior accent. When choosing them, you should think about a specialized cornice - also a corner one. In the case of a small corner window, one exception can be made - curtains here can look very elegant and appropriate.

Short curtains

If a child has a habit of touching and pulling everything towards him, you should not choose for his nursery long curtains so that he does not have such a desire. Short curtains are generally very practical and convenient option– they are easier to wash and hang, you can choose several sets for different times year to somehow enliven the interior of the nursery.

Such curtains should reach at least the window sill or end above the table - after all, the main role of the curtains is to hide the child’s life from prying eyes and prevent the penetration of light. Therefore, choosing shorter curtains is not recommended at all. There are several types short curtains, which may be suitable for the interior of a nursery: these are French, Austrian and Roman curtains.

French ones consist of many horizontal folds, separated by vertical lines, and are classified as lifting curtains - that is, they do not move apart, but rise up. French folds located throughout the fabric. French curtains The good thing is that they can be static - this is very convenient for rooms in which there is already a lot of light, and curtains play a purely decorative role. For these curtains, choose translucent fabrics, fabrics that drape independently under their own weight, and smooth fabrics.

But at Austrian curtains, on the contrary, fold waves are located only from below. They - great solution For large windows, windows with shutters. They are usually sewn from heavy noble materials - velvet, damask. Recently, silk and taffeta have also been used. They are classified as curtains and can look like real clouds in a child’s room. pastel color. They go well with headbands and bows, they look very gentle.

Roman blinds in your own way appearance very similar to blinds. Just a little softer and more comfortable. They are usually made from linen, cotton and polyester. Ideal for minimalist rooms. These curtains save space, are easy to care for and easy to control - what more do you need? to a small child and his parents?

Accessories for curtains

Don't forget about accessories. Curtains and lambrequins are not the most suitable option for a child's bedroom, but there are also a huge variety of other decorations. For example, curtain ties. These are holders for curtains, thanks to which they keep their shape and do not fly apart in all directions. The tiebacks can be bright or perfectly match the tone of the curtains - it all depends on what effect you want to achieve. Tiebacks in the form of flowers or cartoon characters will look very cute - after all, we are talking about a children's room.

Of course, curtains are considered to be an accessory that decorates windows. But they have also long been used for doorways, and for arches. A bed with curtains is a separate matter. It is suitable for both adults and children who love privacy and peace. As a rule, choosing curtains for a bed is not so difficult - the basis is the principle of choosing ordinary window curtains. The only pleasant “but” is that heavy fabrics, canopies and lambrequins are also suitable for the bed. But washing them is very difficult, as is hanging and taking them off. Light organza or cotton – good alternative heavy curtains. In the interior of a nursery, they will look even better than heavy, bulky curtains.

The best materials for children's rooms

The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing curtains for a nursery is the fabric. It should be simple and practical, but at the same time pleasing to the eye. There is no need to complicate the cut or create complex color combinations. Everything beautiful is simple.

But it’s worth thinking seriously about fabric. It should be easy to wash and not tear, because children, especially in early age, have a habit of carelessly spoiling and dirtying things. The fabric should not cause allergies, irritation or fade.

The best option There will be linen and cotton curtains. They are smaller than synthetic ones, collect dust and are not electrified. However, curtains made of cotton and linen wrinkle quickly. Very often curtains are made from calico, taffeta, satin, chintz and guipure.

Silk, corduroy and velvet are completely unsuitable for the bedroom small child. Of course, they look beautiful and rich, but are completely impractical. But silk, for example, washes terribly, which can create a huge problem for parents of creative kids. Price also plays a role here - silk is not cheap.

Heavy fabrics (corduroy and velvet) accumulate dust more than any other fabric. They are heavy, difficult to remove and wash, and are allergenic. Save such chic fabrics for the library or living room.

Voiles and tulle, devore will be a good complement to curtains made of cotton or linen, organza, but they can also be used solo. These fabrics transmit light well and hide from passers-by - they will excellent option for a children's room on the ground floor with windows facing a noisy street.

Organza is just the thing for true princesses. It turns the room into a real royal chamber, shimmers in the sun, glistens with mother-of-pearl. In addition, organza has a high density and does not wrinkle easily, and is resistant to many chemicals, which guarantees color fastness. In the interior, organza can play both its own role, used separately, and an additional, purely decorative role. Organza can be easily decorated with a pattern or photo of your choice, or with some embroidery.

Ideas for a boy's room

It is believed that after the age of five, children begin to fully understand their gender. Boys are drawn to purely boyish things - cars, boats, and girls are drawn to everything soft and beautiful, like a real princess.

As a rule, boys prefer cool colors - all kinds of blue and green shades. If you decorate the room in these colors, there is a high probability that the boy will be happy with it. Remember that all interior details must match each other - and if you suddenly decide to create a room in a purely marine style, then modern cars shouldn't be there.

But, before you take on such a responsible task as choosing curtains or even decorating a nursery, you should find out what your baby’s hobbies are. For example, if he is a fan of the cartoon “Paw Patrol,” then curtains with the characters of this particular cartoon will be a real pleasant surprise for him. Classic options prints for curtains in a boy’s room - cars, with owls, giraffes or other animals. These can be photo curtains with real animals, or cartoon sketches.

The stars will look very interesting - clusters of large or small five-pointed ones, or a real imitation of the starry sky. Remember that the main thing is that the child likes it.

If the boy does not have any special preferences for something, then the ideal option would be plain curtains in his favorite colors. The same applies to older boys. Minimalism and simplicity are always in fashion.

Ideas for a girl's room

Psychologists have proven that girls are much more flexible creatures than boys. This is also reflected in the design of the room. If a boy will never agree to bright pink or red details in his room, then a girl, on the contrary, will be only happy to see turquoise or green curtains, as well as yellow or pink ones, in the nursery. In general, be prepared for the fact that she will decorate her room herself - just have time to buy everything.
